I may go up to 10-15 mph over (if the limit is 25-35 mph), but if its a 45-faster mph zone, I may go up to 10 mph over- maybe 15 over, but rarely and only if its roads where the posted speeds are too slow.
You have to watch it, if you are traveling, and passing through some little towns. They'll often be watching for anybody going over the speed limit.

Here in Amarillo, you see very little speed control. You can pretty much break traffic laws at will, with no consequence...not hinting that I do, of course.

I warn by flashing my lights because I'm a courteous driver. I read somewhere recently that you can get a fine for doing that.

Could be wrong [it is only Wednesday... ] but I don't think that there are any state laws that specifically say that it is illegal to "flash headlights" - but, there are laws that say that high beams must be dimmed when traffic is within so many feet.

Ok, I stand semi-corrected: Brandontimes: Florida law is against the headlight flasher One thing here that gets me tho' is the lady copper that says "Blinking the high beams on and off? That's illegal" - but what if it is your low beams that are flashed?

Added: as stated before, I normally do - except, when in a construction zone; amazes me how many silly people will exceed the limit in these areas, when there are umpteen different signs stating that ya better go slow...

Yes, and I thought it was a lost art for a while but I see it quite a bit again. Probably because even the simplest of tickets now cost $400. Most of the time what I see has zero to do with safety, it is simply "catching" someone doing anything over a posted limit. Nothing at all to do with what is suppose to be safe and sane speed for the conditions.

Default Any one know about Alabama?

Does Alabama have the same statute as Florida, where you will get pulled over for flashing?

Florida statutes, shall we? Title XXIII, chapter 316, rule 2397, subsection 7, to be precise. "Flashing lights are prohibited on vehicles except as a means of indicating a right or left turn, to change lanes, or to indicate that the vehicle is lawfully stopped or disabled upon the highway

Thanks for any feedback anyone can provide.

Hi - that law pertains to flashing lights, not you flashing your lights. It makes it illegal to have say police lights on a pedestrian car.

Fwiw, I always warn motorists by flashing my lights - three times in succession. If I ever get pulled over for it and found guilty, I'll let you know, but until then I'll help other motorists out.

These days, with police increasingly looking for revenue from motorists, I think its more important than ever to warn others of speed traps.

Why should I?

I love to drive fast like many people, but there are times & places for it for obvious safety reasons. If some blithering idiot is driving too fast in area they shouldn't, I sure hope they get a ticket.

I saw where another kid was struck (hit & run) in a school crosswalk in Portland due to someone speeding. I find it neither amusing nor do I want to help a speeder remain a danger with their usual driving habits.

Now, I KNOW you are not meaning for people to drive too fast in school zones and hit kids, but my point is that people really do need to understand when they can speed and when they can't. And, IMHO, a few speeding tickets may hopefully change their attitude.
The problem is relative to where you are driving. In small town texas and texas in general, the cops are merciless and will think nothing to pull you over for just a few miles over the speed limit. It is more a matter of making money for them rather than encouraging safety. I flash lights very generously when I see one of those money grubbing cops hustling drivers on the road. as a bitter exmaple, i was allegedly driving 10 miles over 55 in seguin, a small town. the area was pitch dark at night and the posted speed limit sign was the smallest one allowed by law. If safety was the main concern, they would have had better lighting and a much LARGER sign to keep ppl from speeding. Safety is NOT the main concern of these spped traps in texas. Generating revenue IS.

A previous poster wrote that he had been raised that flashing lights was the "courteous" thing to do. I would agree with that statement. The younger ppl of today ONLY care about themselves and to hell with everyone else. The motto for texas drivers used to be "Drive Friendly", now "Drive and think only about yourself"
