I see this claim a lot. It assumes that China is destined to become another Japan. I see no sign of it and they've been at it for 50 years. The only "Chinese" cars that are decent are those that they bought, lock, stock and barrel.
China already has the world record for the world's fastest super computer. All made w/o any parts from the USA.
China just needs to hire a better designer. Their cars look very dated.
There was a top gear episode showing where China started and how far they have come with their vehicles. They have progressed at an amazing rate. Plus they are super good at copying other manufacturers.
I did see an actual Chinese car the other day. I had to look it up because it appeared to be a conglomeration of about 4 different car brands. It was a Lifan with South Carolina plates. Not sure how it got here.
The descriptions of the cars on that website are comical.
The names are even funnier; "Great Wall Wingle" made by none other than Great Wall Motors. Now if somebody said something like that here, he would be accused of racism.
These are huge multiple story (4 to 6 or more) floor factories. Employees live in dorms. Some sharing beds (different shifts - not together).
The work is grueling.
The employee suicide rate was getting into Western news. Apple was getting a bad name.
So Apple told the factory to do something to prevent the high suicide rate at one China factory.
THE ANSWER?
The Chinese factory put a net around the bottom of entire building to catch all that jump off roof or out of windows.
That's suppose to be "high end". Looks like something from the 1990s. China has a lot of catching up to do. Like the Koreans. Wow! Korea really put their game face on from 10 years ago to now. Amazing what they have accomplished in such a short time.
The Korean auto companies were rolling in cash due to their home market being closed-off to imports for the most part. They stashed all kinds of money for R&D which helped them improve their products a lot in a short period of time, build new plants and set up export channels. In addition, Korean companies are highly subsidized from their governments to give them an advantage over other companies based in the US and even Japan.
Sound like a familiar scenario? That's exactly how Japan's auto companies got started and built back in the 80's.
In 2016 Hyundai and Kia sold about 70% of the cars in South Korea. Everyone else, including Honda, Toyota, Ford, GM, BMW, Mercedes, etc sold the remaining 30%.
