My fiance' has an older truck ('91) that he bought from a private seller. The seller had it under commercial (as opposed to private). My fiance' will NEVER use it for commercial purposes and someone at the DMV (state of California) stated that he can never change it over to private. In the meantime, the registration is sky high and increasing every year...now it's almost $300.
How big is this truck as in half ton, three quarter, one ton? bigger?
Your state may designate a certain type of truck as commercial regardless of how it is used like if it has a dump or utility body on it.
If it is a regular pickup truck like a F150 then there has to be a way to get it recognized as a private vehicle and not a commercial one.
I would try again to get that Reg. changed.
It can be changed but will depend on the type of classification, the configuration of vehicle, it's weights, any modifications. It can also be changed if it's made for habitation. More details on the vehicle is needed.
What defines a commercial vehicle under 260 is different from what defines a passenger vehicle under 465. A vehicle that was classified as a commercial vehicle can now be classified as a passenger vehicle if it no longer meets one definition and now meets another definition. Likewise, you can have a vehicle that is a passenger vehicle by definition but with some minor modifications, you can find yourself now stuck with a commercial classified vehicle under CA regulations. Since we don't know what the OP means by the generic "truck", we really don't know what classification it falls (or can fall) under.
Many years ago after purchasing my 1987 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 Short Bed I was advised by the goons at the California DMV that my truck will always will be considered COMMERCIAL. The annual rate was outrageous.
Simple solution . . . I relocated to Arizona and have never been happier.

Over the years I had 4 different pickup trucks in CA and all were required to be registered as commercial. When I asked about it one time they said there was an exemption if you have a permanently mounted camper on it (full camper, not just a shell). i suspect it's about the money, because it also applies to station wagons with removable seats.

Was it a half ton, 3/4 ton or 1 ton though?
I believe in my state ALL 1 ton trucks and larger are commercial, no matter what you use it for, but there are some differences between the 1 ton trucks and the 1.5 ton and 2 ton (4500,5500), even though the 1 ton (3500) is commercial they can enter roads that say no trucks, but 1.5 ton and larger, cannot.
Thanks guys. His truck is a regular 1991 GMC Sierra 1500 K model. That's a real shame that ALL trucks have to be commercial even if many people don't even use it for commercial purposes!
But, my fiance's brother's truck is under private. My fiance's seen the title. The brother got it used & it was under private then, so he was able to continue it on.
That's really something to think about before one buys a truck.
