HATE IT but I think we've discussed this before. The glare of lights is so bad anyway, the flashing exacerbates it.

Plus, REALLY? There's a line of cars from here to tomorrow and you think we can't see YOUR tail lights? Give me a brake!
(see what I did there?)

Reading this entire thread, I can see the two types of drivers. Those who drive safe and use their hazard lights when needed, and those who think safety is stupid.

Yep, two camps, those who follow the law and those who don't.

Suddenly stopping your car on a roadway in poor visibility, without FIRST turning on your hazard lights to warn the drivers behind you is just reckless driving.
Hogwash. Ever drive Alligator Alley? The FIRST people to pull over and hit their flashers are the 18 wheelers. You know, the professionals?

And from Atlanta Metro - "Johns Creek police warned that using hazard lights may actually signal to other drivers that you are stopped or stalled on the road. Hazard lights can reduce the ability to see if the vehicles ahead are braking and confuse other drivers.
Hazard lights also "turn off your ability to use your turn signals," the police department wrote in its Jan. 5 post.
Instead of using hazard lights while driving, consider not driving at all until road conditions improve, the police department advises.
"If you cannot see, pull over to a safe place and wait (until) driving conditions are better," the department wrote. "Your flashers should only be used while your vehicle is stopped or disabled on the roadway or shoulder. This is a sign for emergency services that someone is in need of assistance."

hahaha!! I agree with you! I live in the NE and if it's raining hard enough for me to actually PUT my hazard lights on, I want the yahoos who seem oblivious to poor visibility and driving conditions to see me!! People up here do NOT know how to drive in bad weather!

I never use my hazards while driving. In heavy rain I turn on my lights. If I truly cannot see, I pull over and then turn on the hazards.

Well since that was posted by one anonymous cop on the Facebook page of a little bitty small town police department, it must be true.

If you can't see the problem with stopping your car suddenly on a highway, in poor visibility, and turning on your hazard lights only after the fact, I don't know what to tell you.
