The state inspects vehicles and certifies that they are safe for our roads.
Not all states.
MD has NO mechanical inspections. Only emissions.
The car could be a death trap. No brakes. No windshield wipers. etc.....all the state cares about it what's the emissions the vehicle puts out.
Why would say that? If its due to cars being built differently today, well, that doesnt matter, the 55 mph speed limit is more for the human error part, they felt 55 was the fastest speed most drivers could handle, it doesnt matter if they are in a ferrari or a focus, speed is speed.
Um, what? Read a book.
The 55 mph was to save gas. We are driving the same speed that we were driving with death boxes. I'll admit, most American drivers cannot handle any speed due to distracted driving (phones, passengers, tail gating, billboards), but interstates and many good, 4 lane highways could and can be driven safely at 80 mph plus. If people would learn how to stay off the phone, not tailgate and stay out of the left lane, we would be fine.

55 mph is generally the speed at which a car can travel in its highest gear (when 3- and 4-speeds were the norm, and had taller gears) with 1:1 or greater ratio - overdrive - a fuel-efficient gear ratio, while MINIMIZING excess forward speed (wind resistance) above and beyond what's necessary to keep from lugging the engine.
Yep, my logic is that there are TWO slow lanes, the one on the right and the middle lane, and the left lane is for people who want to go faster than the speed limit. If you ride in the middle lane, you can pretty much keep your cruise control on the speed limit, but if you are in the very right hand lane, you are constantly braking, as people enter from on ramps, and having to move to the center lane anyway. So, why not just stay there and keep the flow of traffic moving ?
Much safer that way too.
No way Jose. Right lane is for 5 over the speed limit and below. Middle lane is for 5-10 over the limit, left lane is for 10+ over the limit.

Not all states have the law on the books. But Right lane is for driving. All lanes to the left are for passing. Granted, when you get into 4-6 lane freeways, you can adjust a bit. Nothing worse than people who camp in the middle of a three lane either. They impede traffic as much as left lane idiots. People like to hang out in the left lanes so they don't have to think and drive whilst dealing with merging traffic.
Americans are poor drivers.
