One thing that has been touched on in other threads (and possibly this one....I don't recall one way or the other) is the degree to which the overall gap in quality between manufacturers/brands is not as great as it used to be, and I would probably agree with that.
I like it when car designers come up with a feature that increases the utility of the vehicle, especially re the interior. I think the 'Magic Seat' in the Honda Fit was a brilliant idea. I went to the Houston Auto Show in January, as I do most years, and the executed feature I appreciated most on any vehicle was the 'all of the seats in the cargo area folding into/disappearing under the floor' option on the new Chrysler minivan .

My overaching point would be that the quality delta that existed in the past between American and Japan brand cars has been greatly reduced. I probably was where you're at in the past and why I didn't buy American cars for 20+ years...now things are different.
