It has a lot of good footage, and it isn't confined to just a discussion of bench seats.
One theory is that passive restraints were at least partially responsible for the changeover towards bucket seats, and also because more solo drivers wanted everything close to the driver.
I'd buy a car if it had bench seats for that reason alone. Just for the extra leg room and a place for the dog to sit next to you.
When they ever make them again, I'm buying the car that has them. Last I think was a 2014 Impala/ Buick or Ford Crown Victoria same time period..

Bench seats will never come back because of airbag placement and other safety standards, plus cost more money we’re is the center console going to go. The American consumer wants more amenities in their vehicles sush ad more power ports, storage space, cup holders and the shifter for the automatic transmission. So goodbye bench seats forever. The automakers go forward not backwards when designing a new vehicle.
Where do women put their purses when they're driving and have a front seat passenger? My wife always stuffs it down on my feet, which I don't like. If we had a bench seat, it wouldn't be a problem.

There is no demand as bench seats are not offered in cars. If bench seat is not offered then there is zero demand. Catch 22.
Pickup trucks are still available to seat 3 in the front. So that airbag excuse is moot.

Thats why minivans or SUVs are great. There is a giant gap usually between the front seats.
But no need because the big 3 are getting out of the sedan business so this is a pointless conversation.
I have SUV, Minivan, and Sedan at home. Not everybody does this but I can see Sedan is still a must for some because it's more economical. While some may say that gas is cheap, but with SUV the gas price is $40+ every 3 days if they commute to work vs $40/week on a sedan. So that's roughly $320+/month on a SUV vs $160+/month on a sedan. For a year that works out to be thousands $$ in cost differences.
