I get rid of the car when it has been towed to the repair shop and the mechanic looks it over, shakes his head and says, "nope."
I buy cars I like and that serve my needs well. If I get more than $100 for trade in, I'm doing well.
The only car I got rid of when it could still move was a 1990 Mazda 323 with 150,000 miles on it. Lot of things weren't working, no AC and I was living in the deep south and putting a lot of interstate miles on it. Had the cash to afford a new one and got a lovely used Lincoln Mark VIII. Sold the Mazda for $300. It's probably still running. Most trouble-free car I ever owned and also the only new one.
That's the way I was raised. My dad bought cars he loved and kept them until they simply would not run anymore. He only owned four cars from the time I was born until I went to college. He put 300,000 miles on a 65 Chevy Malibu.

I'll take care of them and drive them until they're junk. From my experience, just because a car has 100,000 miles doesn't mean it's about ready to die or have problems. If maintained, should last much longer.

I keep my cars until they get totaled in an accident. Has happened twice so far at 150k miles (both not at fault). Any by total........ i drive cheap cars so a minor fender bender is enough to total it.

Replace when they break beyond cars value (like another poster said my perceived value, not kbb).

Pay cash if possible, otherwise I have a very reasonable credit union for interest rates.

Right now I drive a 96 Cutlass Supreme with over 220k miles and still running strong.

2007 Nissan Sentra owner here with 56k miles. I will keep it until the repairs get really high and/or frequent. So far, I have not had a mechanical issue and I hope it stays that way. Before my Nissan, I had a Daewoo Lanos my dad gave me and I traded it in for the Sentra at 90k miles because no one would buy it and I could not find parts for specific repairs (defrost stopped working, etc). I had the Daewoo for about 3 years. Car enthusiasts, you know the story of Daewoo.

So,how often do u replace your car ?

Do u buy new or used ?

What method of payment do u personally prefer..?
Actually, this tells me that a lot of Americans buy their cars used, because I also remember a recent statistic saying that the average car on the road in America is 9 years old. So there must be lots of people buying cars that are about 7 years old and replacing them 3 years later, as well as the 3-year new car leases.

I've financed three off-lease cars myself, replaced two of them after the 5 year note was paid off, while the third one had to be replaced after it got totaled in a wreck after 3 months.

I've also purchased four 10+ year-old cars with cash, but have kept those for a much shorter period of time, because they always inevitably need a repair that costs more than I bought the car for.
