Used to buy new but wised up after my last new purchase 8 yrs ago. 02 Audi A4, basic maintenance and 2 sets of tires and that's about it. 97K on it and has another 100K easy. 100K or the tranny goes is when I'll get rid of it. 05' Colorado w/ 68K and basic maintenance and still going strong. Won't get rid of that until it hits 300K. Then my 93 Z28 w/ 70K on the body and 2K on the new engine I just built. Weekend toy if that and will go to the grave w/ me. More than likely it'll be another 5 yrs before the next used purchase but I'm shooting for 10.
No, I'm not kidding. Compared to today's vehicles, it's not safe at all. And yes, I think putting kids in something like should qualify as endangerment. It has nothing to do with reliability and everything to do with safety advances.
Your statement is infammatory and unfounded. I agree today's cars have very real safety advancements over older cars.
But a 2000 Honda Accord, ten years old, earned very solid 4 and 5 star ratings from the NHTSA.
Another mainstream car, the Ford Taurus, earned 5 star front and 3 star side impact ratings in 2000.
A 2000 Honda Odyssey, likely to always be carrying children, earned 5 stars across the board.
Are cars safer today? Yes and I am happy about it. But to say that putting kids in a 10 or 12 year old car is endangerment is a ridiculous thing to say. If the passengers of these ten year old cars are wearing their seatbelt and/or are protected by an air bag - they will survive typical accidents just like they would in today's cars.
Results not meaningful,as a real scientist ( of physics) might say...
Check the official crash test videos ,in youtube...
In the most polite of manners I respond "bull". Being the uninjured driver of the Merc', I need no scientist nor video to explain that I came out of the crash the winner.

If u do a complete reconstruction of the crash,u will understand the factors that led to your non-injury...
Search youtube for any crash video of any Mercury,as close to that 1985 model...
The key difference between cars today is they are MEANT to break when an accident occurs. All the safety features you see are all "I will break to protect you" features. So yea, cars are safer now but it comes with a price. Getting into an accident with any luxury brand compared to the same size vehicle will get totaled much more often. This is especially true with BMW and Benz. I have seen 14k estimates from a minor parking lot accident. The vehicle backed up into the BMW driving by exactly on the wrong side on the quarter panel. I have also seen 7k estimate from a minor tap from behind a drive thru line on a Lexus. Crazy amounts of expensive for such minor body damage.
For me,this current & near future gen of cars, with both driver's & front passenger's knee airbags ( Lexus,Porsche),is state of the art.
Such a car,really can last a decade,
By 2020,the electric cars will be mainstream & affordable...
