Egypt is pushing the terrorism case. Egypt authorities are now disputing reports that the plane had maneuvered sharply to the left and then made a 360-degree turn before crashing. These movements were established early on in radar contact with the plane, and there is now confirmation from air traffic controllers. But all that's being denied by the Egyptian government.

Quote:
Aviation sources in Paris say that Mohamed Ali Shoukair told Egyptian air traffic controllers that he needed to attempt an emergency landing as the plane was filling up with smoke.

According to the French TV station M6 a conversation of "several minutes" took place as Mr Shoukair struggled to keep control of the aircraft.

Egypt is trying its best to salvage what it can of the tourist industry......but it looks fairly grim. When an airliner goes out of control in a few minutes something beyond the norm happened and when the FCU and SEC3 have failed you've lost control of the bird. Couple those with the smoke detect and it seems to be clear somebody monkeyed around in the E/E compartment. The E/E is filled with neatly laid out rows of LRU's (line replaceable units) and just isn't going to go up in smoke on its own..........

News says it could be a broken meteor. That doesn't explain the fire, though.

In any case, usually if it's terrorism some people would have come out to claim responsibility, but so far none.

Actually, that's a myth. Credible perpetrators claimed responsibility for only 14 percent of the more than 45,000 terrorist acts that have occurred since 1998, according to the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database.

Most people have forgotten that bin Laden vigorously denied any involvement with 9/11 for many months.

The 'breaking news' (if that's not too-silly a term for it) is that the French Authorities have confirmed that one of its naval vessels has detected one of MS─804's flight data recorders
It'll be interesting to see whether this will embarrass those who'd prefer not to find them

This A─320 may have been flawed from the outset. And the Airbus Industrie ordinary share price may have begun indicating that by showing less than expected strength

I'd like to know how the terrorists were able to get employed by Airbus and assigned to designing this plane

Sleeper engineers!

They're devious, I tells ya!

Note:
I have to point out that the above is sarcasm, because I'm pretty sure someone or another is liable to read it and think that it makes total sense (it doesn't - at all).

Did I read correctly that this plane had to deviate or turn around 3 times before it's final crash?
I saw an article on Daily Mail this morning abt this.

I would have gotten off that plane somehow if that's the case.

ETA: went back and read the article, it says last 24 hrs.

Abstract:
The Global Terrorism Database (GTD) includes information on more than 140,000 terrorist attacks that occurred worldwide between 1970 and 2014. The global scope of the GTD across four decades allows analysts to explore terrorism trends in numerous contexts.

Data Validation: (1) review and systematic comparison with additional open-source materials, including trial transcripts, secondary source materials like specialized monographs, specialized databases such as those maintained by the United Nations and in-person interviews with experts and practitioners; and (2) enhanced role of GTD Advisory Board for vetting and reviewing case classifications

Data Availability: Ongoing enhancement of GTD online interface and development of web-based analytical tools

Data Analysis: Building on past work involving the GTD, researchers will continue to apply advanced statistical methods for identifying important trends and patterns related to radicalization, terrorist operations, counter-terrorism, and the impact of terrorism.

Primary Findings:
Some general findings derived from the GTD involve the nature and distribution of terrorist attacks. For example, over half of all terrorist attacks in the GTD are non-lethal, and approximately two percent involve 20 or more fatalities. The events in the GTD are attributed to over 2,000 named perpetrator organizations and nearly 700 additional generic groupings such as "Tamil separatists." However, over 70 percent of these groups are active for less than a year and carry out fewer than four total attacks. Likewise, only 20 perpetrator groups are responsible for over 50 percent of all attacks from 1970 to 2010 for which a perpetrator is identified.
