You can definitely find places cheaper than $1000. I live in Owings Mills and pay less than $900 for rent.

ITA. PadMapper.com is a good one to try too. It show you apartments on a map, groups them by neighborhood. You can see a street view of some places. It also lets you create an account and keep track of your search.

Also google "Baltimore Neighborhood map" and download one. It will help you get your bearings. Bmore has a thousand little nighborhoods and it can be hard to get a feel of where they are in proximity to each other.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I have to move to the area in mid June but may not know where I'll be working until late August. I'm a little stressed about that, but as long as I can keep my commute to around 30 minutes things should work out.

@peachgeek- Does your rent include utilities?
