Sorry if this is redundant post, didn't find any like it. Would locals say it's accurate, an exagerration or an understatement?

Things have changed a little since then, but its fairly accurate for some (many) parts of the city where crime, drugs, and violence are rampant. There are some reasonaby nice parts as well (these were also occasionally seen in the wire but not the focus of it).The corruption of city government seems pretty accurate as well (Mayor Dixon forced out of office and prosecuted for fraud) and the schools are (mostly) terrible as depicted.

I always thought Homicide was a little bit more even in its portrayal of the city.

Redundant, yes.

I'm not going to answer your question until you come up with a good one. What is the "it" you speak of? David Simon has done a quadjillion interviews saying that The Wire is about institutions. Read one of those interviews (or even one of many threads) and ask again.

I'm sorry sir, the time I have to peruse the Baltimore section of city-data is limited, I"ll try again.

Is the depiction of Baltimore as a homestead for murderous drug trafficking organizations, as shown in "The Wire" accurate? I live on the west coast, and as such, don't spend much time thinking about Baltimore. The recent McDonalds beating got me thinking of "The Wire" and it's violent portrayal of the city.

I have just registered in this site so that i could answer this post.

I am from Spain and lately i have been watching The Wire. I must say that right now im watching the 4th season but i am completely hoocked on this show.

My desire to visiting this city is growing and growing everyday i watch an episode. But at the same time that i like what i see, i would really feel very unconfortable if i had any similar situation like it is in the show (even if it was muuuch smaller). I mean, i like to see in the TV, but i couldnt live with that constant fear if i lived in that city.

I know it sounds stupid... but i needed to say it....

I said it before on the Baltimore subforum; you shouldn't base your whole opinion on Baltimore off of The Wire anymore than you should base your whole opinion of Louisville off of watching the Kentucky Derby.

Louisville also seems to be on a homicide story show called First 48 a lot. Watching a homicide being investigated every week in Louisville would make anyone think that Louisville is a place where a bullet is just waiting to find your brain. I have a guy so sits in the desk right over who lives in the most dangerous part of Louisville. Somehow me shows up to work everyday alive. He's black too.

I've heard all the Baltimore-bashing from the DC/NoVA locals (lived in NoVA 6 years), heard about The Wire (never seen it, though I'm curious about it), seen the crime reports, read the posts on this forum. Yet, if I get stuck working in DC, I'd rather commute from Baltimore than do NoVA again (I get sick even thinking about returning there.)

The Wire is what it is; entertainment, not a guide on living in Baltimore.

Haha - I love this post. Especially the part about NoVA.

Maryland native here and went to school in Baltimore. It's dirty, rundown, dangerous and basically hell on earth. I know it sounds dramatic, but it's true. Every single person I know who lives there has had a run in with teenagers with weapons when they're doing something as basic as unloading their car with groceries.

Now that I live in NOVA, I refuse to go back, even to visit friends. I'm *so* over that place.
