20 miles?

I didn't know this store was closed and I walked over last night to pick up a few ingredients for dinner...I was so disappointed! I live on Saint Paul and Eddie's is the only other walkable grocery store with a decent selection, but it's not that good and it seems expensive. I don't have a car in the area (yet?) so I might try taking a bus to another store. Any suggestions?

How long have you lived there and where did you shop before? If you have lived there for awhile and were just now getting around to going over there.. then that may have been part of their problem.. Either people didnt like/know about them and were going somewhere else thus they went out of business OR they simply moved out of this market all together regardless of how the store was performing.

On a bright note, with all the office to apartment conversions going on downtown.. I am certain that a new Grocery Store will likely be in the downtown area in the new future.....

There is a nine year waiting list for a section 8 housing voucher in Baltimore City and a beggar on every corner, and you want to subsidize a grocer?

You're right, lets make sure the city only coddles the most helpless... I love living in a place where successful middle and upper class people are so frequently overwhelmed by the dregs of society (honestly, people that have been living in Baltimore too long, you HAVE TO REALIZE that the way folks are living in the ghetto around this city is straight up third world compared to most other parts of the country). Actual tax paying citizens deserve to benefit from their local government.

Oh and may I remind the people on this board that redistribution policies are only effective when there is something to redistribute. Baltimore City needs a better tax base! That means making a good portion of this city livable for people who pay taxes and who generally don't want to put up with low-life behavior. SRB seems to get this and puts alot of time and effort into growing areas for stable people (not just dumping all our extra cash into methadone clinics, and subsidized housing for TERRIBLE parents with no manners, intelligence, or job skills.

I'm a democrat, and I'm fine with spending money on social/ anti-poverty programs, but please at least do something to make this place better for the rest of us!

Take a bus or walk to several grocery stores in Charles Village, then take a cab.
Walk down pass the Inner Harbor to Whole Paycheck.
Take the light rail to Whole Paycheck in Mt. Washington.
Take the light rail to Wegman's.
Order groceries online.
Or my favorite: move to North Baltimore.

Yeah there are still four different grocery stores (all different chains) within about 2 miles of downtown. The Whole Foods of course is the closest but you still have the Shoppers and Harris Teeter in Locust Point area as well as the Safeway in Canton. I believe they're all at least normal-sized (the Safeway is huge) with parking available, so although the Super Fresh/Fresh&Greens was probably the most convenient it's not like the others are really that inconvenient.

Good suggestions. I would add that you can probably take the circulator to WF Harbor East if you don't want to walk.

There is a Safeway in Charles Village on 25th Street along with a Sav A Lot on Maryland Ave just north of North Ave. There is a Sav A Lot in Bolton Hill as well. Now, people may have mixed opinions of the aforementioned stores.. but they are there just the same..
