There is always hope. Star (and everyone else) has given you some good advice.

Many people here do what is necessary to pay the bills until something more toward their "profession" comes along. No, there may not be many "fall into your lap" jobs, but here's a link for you to peruse.

Good luck to you. I hope you can find something that'll be what you'll enjoy doing.

There's always hope-if i were a marketing specialist in my early 20's , full of ambition and out of work, i'd put my marketing skills to the ultimate test-start marketing yourself
target small independent businesses- visit the businesses, make a checklist of what a business can do to grow sales, then evaluate each business to what they are actually doing-from websites,(email lists) to print ads, to facebook- to event sales, to sampling, how are they advertising? and are they getting the right message to thier target market? suggestive selling?
Do they have the right signage in the store-do they do fundraisers for free publicity?
even assess, customer service levels, cleanliness of retail space, quality of product, etc, you can give them an insightful free review, then explain, how/what You can do to improve thier sales/revenues-Brand yourself
"In your face" guerilla Marketing specialist

Also, you can evaluate businesses based on competition, how do they compare- make that part of your presentation packet (strengths/weaknesses)

If you think this is too simple, and that most of the independent business owners are already doing excellent marketing- you will be surprised

Once you review a business and identify "opportunities" then call the owner for a meeting, give him your review and tell him/her how YOU can improve thier business, and will be there marketing plan consultant-then attach a fee

I wouldn't bum out too much. I know quite a few salesmen who started on the ground floor, loved sales and were driving BMW or Mercedes by the time they were 30. I know a guy with a medical degree who is a pharm rep. He makes as much or more than many doctors.

My DW's employer [a large grocery store chain] only promotes from within.

Granted any time they have openings they are posted on a website and anyone can apply.

Every applicant must first meet every prerequisite. But then veterans are given points, current employees are given points; plus more if you have already been working in the same department at one of the two next lower positions. The chances of anyone coming in off the sidewalk into a middle-level of upper-level position are very remote.

Nearly everyone there started on a cash-register. The butchers, the meat-cutters, the stockers, warehouse manager, produce, the store manager even. This is a chain with 284 grocery stores worldwide. You can not be one of their store managers without having been an assistant store manager at one of their other locations. And it all starts with clerks on a cash-register.

What I am saying is that with a degree in marketing you will be likely looking at companies that do market something. To get into one of those companies you may need to start at the bottom. Your degree will only come into play once you have began your climb up through their ladder rungs.

Imjust here, I know your pain, my son is in the same predicament. He is in the new rust belt of this recession, Florida. Jobs are just far and few between here now. You are articulate, and seem to be energetic. The job hunt takes a lot out of one. Something that worked here was a billboard, stating basically what you said in your post. You want to be there, you want to live there.....there are businesses out there who may not be actively looking for someone, and you might spark an interest. That would definitely tell them you are go-getter!

The reason I know about the billboard was it was featured in a TV clip. It seems the media attention got the guy a job in 2 days. Don't know your financial situation, but that was a unique and risky proposition that really paid off. That is sort of a take off on what mainebrokerman just told you to do.

Billboard: "I am, exactly what the state is trying to attract and retain. I am a college educated indivudual in my lower 20s with a deep desire to live and work in the Bangor area. I think Bangor is a great place to live and has a lot of potential in its future. That said, call me @951-9322." I think I will steal this idea when I move to Maine.

Billboards have been illegal in Maine for at least... 30 years. I know, my grandfather used to be a billboard inspector lol.

I think you can still have them (with some restrictions) on your place of business.

They were taxed. Each sign had a little individually numbered tin plate nailed to one of the posts. Don't ask me how, but I remember the locations of almost all the billboards in southern Maine. There was a stretch on RT 302 that had about 20 signs in a single field. In a way, I'm glad we got rid of them, but when I'm traveling out-of-state it's handy to see a billboard that tells me where the next MacDonalds is.

Most towns have a very strict sign ordinance. You're only allowed x amount of signage depending upon the size of your commercial bldg.

I've never missed the big nasty billboards cluttering up our roadsides, there's nothing worse than reading about "South of the Border" every mile for 150 miles.
