Mod Note:

In my view, there's two reasons for checking the aggression and hostility at the door:

1. You tend to catch more flies with honey than vinegar. When asking perfect strangers to go out of their way to help you, it's not a bad course of action to be appreciative of any sincere assistance even if that assistance isn't exactly what one had in mind.

2. The City Data Terms of Service asks all members to be civil in their dealings with other members.

Craig's List? maine apts/housing for rent classifieds "orono" - craigslist

googled rentals Orono maine and tried the property management links?
I personally have tried all of those, while prices for renting a house and buying seem to be pretty reasonable - I would say 1050-1300 can get you a nice rental house. It is still really hard to find a house for rent! I have been looking for months and have seen probably a handful of new ones.

I'll jump in the fray. Hey, if I were to roll into town and buy a house, for, say $200k, how much house would that get me, and what are the chances it would be worth $175 if I had to move five years later?

These are a couple global questions, but just curious. I am interested in a job at U Maine (about $75k/year), and because of the brutal market out here in Oregon, I would be arriving without a down payment to speak of.

Housing to me means... just that, housing. Which would take in all kinds of situations and possibilities.

The median sales price for a house in Penobscot County is 129,450. As for what it will be worth in five years, nobody on the planet knows, not Ben Bernanke, not Barack Obama, not Lawrence Yun, nor anybody on this forum. Unless you qualify for a VA loan, at your income level, you will probably be ineligible for a USDA RD loan and need to come up with at least 3.5% down for an FHA or 5% for a conventional loan as well as several thousand dollars for closing costs if the seller doesn't pay them for you. There is also a movement gathering steam in Washington that would require a 20% down payment and the elimination of the mortgage interest deduction.

I have def been looking into surrounding towns. I told my husband that was probably our best bet. Thank you for the link!

I am not sure if you are referring to me or not, but yes we have a dog and a cat (which seems to be complicate things a bit). However, they are well trained and well behaved.
