akambuda-We will probably be leaving AK this year too and Maine is attracting us for many of the reasons you mentioned.

Since you are interested in gardening, have you thought about putting up a high tunnel? We have a couple in Homer but I know there are many up all over AK, even in the interior. They really extend the growing season. I can grow tons of tomatoes and cucumbers in mine. You might even qualify for a grant from the USDA to put one up. The previous owners did that and the tunnels were here when we bought our property. If/when we move to Maine, I plan on doing it there too though probably not on the same scale that we have here.

There is a poster named "Mainewriter" who has extensive high and low tunnels for gardening. I hope she is in touch with you about her experience in Maine.

In Maine we have weasel, mink, pine marten, fisher and otter in order of size from smallest to largest. They are all members of the weasel family. None of these species mate with cats, but if you ever hear a terrible noise in the night it might be the first attempt that you are hearing.

I am wondering how the OP of this thread is now doing... did you make the move to Maine? How is it going?
