My husband recently accepted a position in Bangor and our family will be moving to the area in September 2010. We have two girls, the eldest will be entering 5th grade and our youngest will be entering 3rd grade. We are curious to know which schools have the best reputation? I have heard that Hampden is building a new high school, which appeals to me, but I realize the building doesn't make the education. Any input on the schools would be greatly appreciated (all grade levels)! Thanks.

The three towns/city, that you mentioned, all have very good schools.

Yup -- all of them are good school districts.

I live in Hampden but did not raise my family here. It is such a great town. Just minutes to Bangor (I work in downtown Bangor and it takes me about 10 min. to get to work). From everything I have heard Hampden schools are among the best. Bangor also has good schools. This is a wonderful area to live in. I moved up here from the central part of the state and I love it here.

I Second everyone's good words. My friction with the Bangor School Department was my own. All in all, I've heard good things about Bangor and Hampden schools.

I haven't heard bad news about Orono schools.

Nothing wrong with Hermon, either. It seems to be in a position where Hampden was 15 years ago, with a new grocery store, new hardware and strip mall complex under construction, good schools, GREAT tax rate (at least I'm happy for now) and quick access to Bangor via Rt. 2, the Coldbrook Road/I-95 or simply the Billings Road to outer Union St.

It'd be great if you could expand on this a bit. I did go there and graduated about a decade ago.
