Mets get Yoenis Cespedes for the Tigers. They actually look pretty decent, Cespedes will even make that park look ridiculously small. Luckily the Nats will miss him tonight as I doubt Cespedes gets there in time, though the Tigers are in Baltimore so maybe he can pinch hit later on??
Cubs & Orioles swap Tommy Hunter for Junior Lake with Lake heading to Baltimore & Hunter to Milwaukee where the Cubs are playing this weekend.
Pirates & Dodgers swap DFA'd players: Mike Morse goes from LA to Pittsburgh. He was acquired by the Marlins in the 13 player, 3 team trade and was immediately DFA'd. Jose Tabata, the guy who infamously ruined Max Scherzer's perfect game earlier this year with the HBP with 2 outs in the 9th had already been outrighted for assignment by the Pirates and he will be heading to LA.
Pirates acquire Mariners LHP J.A. Happ for a AAA pitcher.
Also earlier today, Minnesota Twins acquired Rays relief pitcher Kevin Jensen for 2 minor leaguers.
Yesterday, Yankees acquired Mariners OF Dustin Ackley for 2 minor leaguers.
4th team for Cespedes in the last 13 months, no club seems to think of him as a long term solution. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.
Given his apparent value as a player, one suspects that he must be some sort of clubhouse pain since no team seems to want him around for very long.
Once Detroit made the choice to unload Price & Soria, they had no choice but to unload Cespedes as well. Unlike most FA's, you can offer your FA's a qualifying offer, which this year will be around $16.5 million or so. if the player accepts it, they get a 1 year deal for that amount, if they decline it, the team gets a compensation pick. Cespedes has a clause in his contract where the doesn't have a comp pick attached to him, so as I said in the first page even if you got an organization's worst rated prospect, you'll still get something of value, but they made out ok with Fulmer.
And Cespedes has a clause that the team he ends the season with he can't sign until May 15 of 2016. So, for the Mets this is strictly a full rental. I don't see the second place East team catching the Giants/Cubs/Dodgers for the second Wildcard spot, so this is boom-or-bust. As a Nats fan, hopefully it's bust, but on the other hand, hopefully the Mets don't become a punching bag for us a Citi Field anymore. Imagine Nats up 1 in the 9th 1 out, bases loaded, Cespedes vs. Papelbon?? Bring it on!

The above explains why Detroit had to move Cespedes now, as long as we assume that they had no intention of trying to retain him for future seasons. Cespedes has compiled 4.0 WAR this year, his best ever, and that ties him with Miguel Cabrera for the highest WAR on the club. It is the 4th highest WAR by any AL outfielder so far this season.
Given that, why wouldn't the Tigers be interested in retaining him for a few years?
That was the focus of my speculation. If the organization had someone else who could put up 4.0 WAR in the outfield, I'm sure he would be playing. The A's could have had him as a bargain through this season, and they didn't want him. Boston got pretty much the same performance from him that the A's had been getting in the first half of 2014, so he lived up to their expectations and they didn't want to keep him.
This is an established valuable talent which is getting treated as far less desirable than one would think its due.
So...something is putting everyone off of this player.

Great deal, but must I credit Alderson for anything? Like this more than aborted Gomez deal, and Bruce idea was luny (Grandy in CF, why not Mookie Wilson, who even now has better range).

Because the Tigers already traded Price and are preparing for the future. They want to stockpile as many prospects as possible and felt that Cespedes wasn't a part of their future.

It's not that the A's "didn't want him." They traded him away for Jon Lester and Johnny Gomes because they felt that they needed a durable starter in order to make a run at the World Series. It's not like they shipped him away for nothing. Although the trade didn't work out, hindsight is 20/20 and that transaction made sense at the time.

They didn't want to keep him because the Red Sox were having a terrible season and already had a young core of outfielders (notably Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr). Plus, the Sox won the World Series in 2013 and wanted to bolster their offense for the upcoming season. Things just didn't work out.
In discussing Craig Kimbrel with the Diamondbacks, the Padres asked for Paul Goldschmidt.
