The Giants refused to tank in order to get the # 1 pick. They had their varsity lineup out there, stole a couple of bases and brought in their closer in the 8th.
They won it on a walk off home run by Pablo Sandoval, the 128th of the season for the Giants, 25 fewer than any other club.
Have to hand it to the Tigers, they staged a very impressive stretch drive to get where they arrived today. On August 4th they were 51-57, .472 ball and on a pace for a ho-hum 76 wins. Then they started losing and losing, going 13-41, .241 ball, including dropping 11 of their final 13.
Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, the 50 homer guys, rank 4th and 5th in at bats per home run among all players with at least 200 plate appearances.
At bats per home run
Matt Olson A's 7.8
Rhys Hoskins Phillies 9.4
J.D. Martinez Tigers/Snakes 9.6
Giancarlo Stanton Marlins 10.1
Aaron Judge Yankees 10.4
Among the 144 players who qualified for the batting title, the worst hitter by OPS, # 144, was Alex Gordon of the Royals. He had a slashline of .208/.293/.315. He compiled 0.1 WAR, nearly indistinguishable from a replacement level player.
So naturally, when it came time to hit the record breaking 5,694th home run of the season......it was Alex Gordon who did it, one of but nine home runs he hit this season.
Gallo, buoyed by a 14% walk rate, was a 23% better than average hitter (by wRC+)
Odor, with an unimpressive 5% walk rate, was 39% worse than an average hitter
But but but Joey Gallo had 196 strikeouts compared to Odor's 162! Strikeouts are everything so Odor was undoubtedly better!!!
