My son and I watched the game. At first I thought it was a no brainer. Out, by a large step. I went back and watched it. Rewind, rewind, rewind on the DVR. The only thing I can think is that when the ball went into the glove, there was a little bit of a bobble and he kind of flipped it before totally controlling it. Could that be what he saw?
It is tough to find a video that shows the play from the 3rd base side. Watch around the 2:33 to 2:37 mark on this video. I'm not saying he is out or safe. This is the only spot I see where the case for a safe call could be made.
Another piece of evidence for allowing challenges and instant replay in baseball. Maybe it's the fact that I'm getting older, but there seems to be more blown calls now than 20 or 30 years ago. The quality of umpiring appears to be worse now.

Good spot. I think that the ump just blew the call, basing it on the idea that the runner beat the throw. The throw beat the runner, but it was not under control at the time the runner touched the bag. He actually was safe, the ump was right, but probably for the wrong reason.
I think he was out, but looking at it from the reverse angle (the one that ESPN wasn't showing until later on in the evening), it was much closer than the fans were lead to believe.
By the way, an almost identical play happened earlier in the game with Johnny Damon being called safe at first and leading to the Tigers getting two more runs. So at least Joyce was consistent.
Blown call for sure you have to feel bad for Galarraga (man he showed a lot of class) but you've also got to feel bad for the Ump.
Leyland after the game said Joyce was a damn good ump, Mariano Rivera called him the best ump in the game, Joyce addressed the media after the game and also sought out Galarraga, he probably will never live this down but he showed class.

All of the replays you are seeing in the news are from the first base side. Nobody is showing the replay from the third base side like posted above.
