I agree the Knicks would be well served by trading Amare. But Gasol's got knee issues and he's over 30. I'd trade Amare for younger talent and draft picks.
Gasol doesn't make your team more athletic or better defensively at this stage of his career.
Gasol is fine when healthy....he is NOT the problem with the Lakers.
However, he is the current excuse, distraction etc. for the franchise after getting rid of the coach still leaves the fundamental problems.
Even when Gasol's healthy he's a defensive liability. He's not getting younger and he's not the best guy to be on an up tempo team that stresses defense.
Is he a good player?
Not near has good in the 2010 season but he's still a decent player.

And amare is any of those things?
Not sure why everyone wants to reinvent the 2007 suns. Putting amare, Nash and dantoni isn't going to do anything but make the defense worse.
NYK should ship Amare off to a small-market for an 8/9th man and/or draft picks. They shouldn't want to mess up what they have going.
there is that pesky salary cap/money issue to deal with, and amare has a pretty steep contract to contend with.
