Satellite or a good cell signal is plenty fast for internet. Things you can't do with satellite are VOIP or gaming. It's not the speed of the internet data stream it's the latency that is unavoidable when dealing with the speed of light and the 50,000 mile round trip distance between the ground and satellite, plus signal processing time. Things like Netflix do well because the data stream goes in one direction. But VOIP requires a fast two-way connection and that has technical challenges. Some of the newer companies one can have a VOIP conversation if one of them is on satellite, but not if both are.

The suckerpunch is with data caps. We had whole-home internet with Verizon and it was plenty fast for streaming etc but we'd hit the data cap really quick and then it got expensive.

Exede has plans that are a vast improvement over what was available when I was looking at them. Their $100/month "Gold" account advertises up to 30Mbp with 100GB of high speed data and then slower data after cap is reached (but data is unlimited).

I'd be interested to hear from someone with satellite broadband on rainy/cloudy days since DirecTV and DISH can often be unusable during a storm

Regardless of internet type, if connectivity is important one needs a backup. Even with our fiber we get random internet outages that last from several minutes to a few hours every month. Fortunately one of our phones has a good data plan and "hotpot" feature.

Hey! My phone can't do that! All mine can do is be used to order takeout.

Yes, I've heard of the phone companies turning off the hotpot feature due to concerns of possibly spreading the COVID.

Have you found the lot you're planning on building on yet? It's a big island over here with micro-climates and different cultures all over the place. I suppose Oahu is the same with all the different flavors in all the different neighborhoods.
