After 1 year of launching the experiment extended hours service, the MBTA will decide its future by April 15th. What do you think will be the decision?

With all the bad publicity the MBTA has gotten the past two months, I think the service is eventually toast. A great conceptual idea all around and very popular to those who use it but not economically sustainable.

Would be nice if they kept it going honestly.

Amen to that. Late-night workers would echo that sentiment also. So would the demographic that loves to hit the town on weekends, to go to a concert or to a club or what have you. But given the political clout these groups have it's not realistic. Gone are the days when I took my partying game on the road or otherwise found myself needing to get home much past midnight. But just because I've not yet used the T between 12:30 - 2:30 AM this past year doesn't mean I don't think those who do should have the access.

I'm hoping they keep it going as well. It's nice not to have pay $20 for a cab ride home at night.

Also, I'm not sure what ridership numbers the MBTA was hoping for, but the Red and Green lines always seemed busy to me.

The first weekend of the experiment, last year, the green line about 2 am was mobbed on the train at Copley station, and just trying to get on the train (?), according to photos in a Boston Magazine website story a day later.

Seems fun with all the young people in a good mood, probably still tipsy and snapping photos, exchanging phone numbers, etc.

Not sure if it stayed at that level of ridership or got even busier. Actually, six months later, I talked to some people who should know, but had no idea there was late service!

Not sure how busy the blue line was versus probably the busiest, the green line?

There really is no poster advertising this on the train or audio during the ride. Hmmm...

In some circles they call this "planned obsolescence." Implement a service with broad popular support, and decide it's not "meeting expectations." Allocate no money to promoting it to visitors and new residents. Then announce that due to "declining patronage" it sadly has to be curtailed, after the inevitable drop-off once the novelty has faded.
No matter what is tried we'll never be New York City. (sigh)

Uber and Lyft has become so common, and affordable, that I think the demand has really fallen off.

Default re

I've heard Uber is pricey? A few People I work it use it regularly and wish they'd never discovered it because while it's convenient and easy it is expensive. They feel they should walk or take the bus but thanks to uber they don't.

If the MBTA were smart they would charge double fare for late night service and make link passes invalid after 12 AM so everyone pays. It's still cheaper than a cab. Or they could sell a special monthly pass that includes late night service and allow the commuter rail passes to use late night service because they are so expensive.
