Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will be moving to Boston in 10 days to start contract work.
Unfortunately for me among my many problems are the facts that I've never been the city and I don't know anyone there.

My work will be located near the airport. I won't have a car so I will need to move somewhere that allows me access to mass transit. I really need to keep my monthly expenses as low as possible, so keeping rent as low as possible is important. Is it possible/reasonable to find a place for less than $1000/month? Where's the best place to find a sublease in a house or a roommate? How much of a problem will a 6-month contract be?

I would appreciate any advice that you can throw my way. This situation is not ideal, but I am trying to make my way through it so that I can support my family.

$1,000 is tough without roommates. The airport is close to East Boston and Chelsea. The later having way cheaper rent.

Craigslist still seems to be the best to find rentals, but sometimes AirB&B too. Sometimes it is possible to get summer sublets that have reduced rates because of students wanting to rent out there rooms, but less in the airport area than other areas. You could try that to start, but it wouldn't get you all six months. Generally the better the public transit access, the higher the price, but if you stick to being closer to bus routes as opposed to subway, you can pay less. And the buses work ok in Boston. I agree that Chelsea, Revere, Everett, East Boston. If you don't have a car, definitely check the mbta.com site for the transit routes to work.

Lynn is another one to look at. Not the best commute, bus to the blue line, but it is relatively cheap.

My start date has been moved back a bit to after the upcoming holiday. I will start looking in those areas, but might have to airbnb it at first. I've not used AirBnB yet.

Look at the sublet listings for local colleges. You will have to be prepared to move every few months but it's a cheap way to live while on a contract.

Here is the one for Tufts: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1552232378374052/

I second everything everyone has said: look on Airbnb, Craigslist, and university housing pages. There’s a good chance you’ll have to have a roommate. East Boston or Revere would probably be ideal, but Lynn and Chelsea would be cheaper (but with worse commutes and rougher neighborhoods).

You could also look for somewhere along the Orange or Red lines like in Medford, Dorchester, or Jamaica Plain/Roxbury. You’d have to transfer to the Blue downtown, but it wouldn’t be an awful commute.
