In 1989, Charles Stuart shot and killed his pregnant wife Carol and wounded himself, telling police a black man had shot them. Their unborn child was delivered but later died. A few weeks’ later, Charles’s brother Matthew, who disposed of the gun, told the truth about what happened and Charles jumped to his death from a bridge. I wonder if the police would have figured out what really happened without Matthew’s confession.

I lived on the island of Maui at the time. We heard about it out there.

I used to commute from Shrewsbury to Lynn in January 1990, right through Boston and north over the Tobin Bridge, traffic wasn't too bad back then. I remember seeing a Nissan Maxima parked in the right lane at the top of the bridge early one morning and did not think anything of it at the time. Only a day or two later was it identified as Charles Stuart's car.

Boston police were making black men drop their pants during searches with no probable cause, other than being black. Hell yeah I remember.

Under 35 here! I don’t remember the incident, but it was often talked about as I grew up. People don’t just forget that easily.

Tough call on what would have happened without the brother's confession. Since Stuart had a gunshot wound himself, you can see how the initial thought would be that he was a victim. As they looked at the case more closely, well, you never know. Maybe things would have started seeming not to add up right. Guess we'll never know the answer to that one.

I lived in Mass at the time. When it happened it was obvious Stuart killed his wife, and that he was a liar. It was just as obvious concerning his brother.

I remember there were some that felt the wife's family, had Stuart thrown off the bridge.
