I currently live in Quincy, which is a great reverse commute to Randolph during peak traffic times (Leaving home around 7:30 or 8 am, leaving Randolph at 4/4:30). However, I have the opportunity to live with a good friend in Cambridge, and I'm wondering just how bad the traffic really is from Cambridge on 93 or on 28. Google routes says about 23 minutes on 93 or 32 minutes on 28 with no traffic considerations. Will traffic push me up over an hour commute?
Help or advice would be appreciated!

Even though you're doing a reverse commute, one of the disadvantages of living in the city is trying to get to and from your apartment and the highway during rush hour. What may only take 5 min normally, can take 15-20 min if it's bumper to bumper waiting to get through lights.

I'm thinking it's going to average about an hour. Can you stay with your friend at least once or twice before you decide and do the drive?

That's a good idea, I may have to do that. Thanks for the thoughts...

I commute from Somerville to Canton, which is close to Cambridge and Randolph propert, and on good days, it can take 35 minutes...on bad an hour or more...I would say 40-45 minutes would be the average. As the last poster says, it really depends on getting to the highway. I am only 3-5 minutes from 93, so it's not that bad. If you have to deal with a lot of lights, it might be more frustrating.

93 itself is not too terrible...usually it is somewhat slow getting into downtown (but moving), and there is another pocket between Columbia Road and 3A which is heavy because of the lane merge due to the northbound HOV lane. Otherwise, it's not too bad. There is construction on the Neponset River Bridge (3A), but it hasn't affected 93 (at least yet).
