Is it me or I'm hearing Buffalo is coming back as a city?
We've been hearing this for decades....nothing gets completed or done.
although as far as housing - its a great deal, taxes are high but depending on the actual burb you are in, you can get a good bang for your buck for those taxes
I don't know. The casino is under construction, a major vacant office building is being gutted and modernized, and there a large federal courthouse should be going up. Property values have not fallen, and the strong Canadian dollar has helped.
Things are not great, but they are a lot more promising than lots of other places.
If you are looking for downtown living, the place has been building apts. and lofts in the past few years. There are also several other new building for Govt. agencies - specifically since the old Federal Office building was vacated. They are putting some traffic back onto main St , only I doube much will come of it. I do not foresee the busy, vibrant downtown with 7 or 8 Dept. Stores that was here when I came in the 1960s.
Housing never fell here but it never ballooned to exorbitant prices like other places. If you are coming to buy, I'd buy out of the city if you can.
I wasn't here in 60's, 70's and 80's, but believe me, Buffalo region is growing and new developments are under way. Have you seen new wind turbines down Lake Erie in Lackawanna and waterfront development down Skyway between Hamburg, Lackawanna and Buffalo?
It takes only five minutes from Lackawanna to Buffalo, but when you drive you see a HUGE difference and new development.

Ever the optimist Zanna, I actually wish more people were like you. If you get a chance, there is a set of 1938 National Geographics at the Lockwood library, SUNY North campus, in which one issue has an article featuring New York. A large part of the article is about the industrial might of Buffalo (with several interesting photos). The manufacturing base was so diversified that for 60% of every type of product made in the US, there was a factory in Buffalo producing it. Amazing statistic! Did you miss the 1950's? Those were the glory years. Then the decline started. It is understandable that people who witnessed it would be cynical. I believe you are sincere (perhaps a little misguided) in your efforts to promote Buffalo, therefore not to be a hindrance to you, I am no longer going to post negative comments about Buffalo. I think I'll take on liberals and Democrats, they are the real losers. Best wishes and respectfully yours, ex-New Yorker
