Hi I just moved here a few months ago from LI and of course I had to buy a house with a lot of property. Well with that property came some unwanted friends. On Easter sitting out on the lawn taking the sun was a garter snake. Now I know they are not poisonous and that they are good and blah blah blah but I can not I repeat NOT stand any kind of snake. Is there any helpful hints on how to keep them away. Please I am ready to put the for sale sign up and head back to LI before I faint!!!!!!!!!!

The only true way to keep any animal away, snakes included, is to eliminate the food source. Not very likely to do since garter snakes will eat just about any small animal or insect they can. BTW, there are plenty of snakes on LI.

Default Long Islander Considering Niagara Falls, NY

I don't have an answer for your snake problem, but I am interested in where you relocated from, why you relocated from Long Island, why you chose the Buffalo area, and how you're finding it, compared to life on Long Island.

I am interviewing for a position in the City of Niagara Falls, and currently live in Port Washington, New York. I'd appreciate any insights you could give me in terms of what it's like to live in Western New York compared to living on Long Island.

Thank you.

Well I am the opposite of you, I grew up in Western New York and now live in Port Washington!

For one thing the Buffalo Metro area is cheaper, slower paced and way less stressful than Long Island. People are more laid back, friendly and less materialistic too. Food and cultural amenities are good by national standards but not quite up to the standards of the NY Metro area. There are lots of good independantly owned restaurants as well as a wide variety of arts, theatre and entertainment for such a relatively small sized metro area. Public transportation is subpar compared to what you may be used to (no LIRR). The positive side is that commuting by car is quick, easy and pleasant; low traffic volumes and less aggressive drivers compared to Long Island. You will actually enjoy going for Sunday afternoon drives again!.

I wouldn't recommend living right in Niagara Falls itself. It is quite economically depressed and has significant number of toxic waste sites. If you want a Long Island type lifestyle I would suggest Williamsville. It has plenty of shopping, a nice Main Street and an upper middle class population. If you want a slower paced and less upscale version of Port Washington close to Niagara Falls, then I would choose Lewiston. It has a nice Main Street, restaurants on the water (like Louie's in Port), many festivals and very close to the Lewiston-Queenston bridge (if you want to hop over to Canada once and awhile)

I think you will enjoy WNY.

My hubby grew up here in Lancaster, but when we met he was working for the State of NY and living in LI. The job offered him a chance to move back up here and we decided as a family to go. I have been up here many times visiting in laws and found it to be very peaceful. The cost of living and houses were A LOT cheaper than in LI. My husband was able to be making the same money as he was in LI and our monthly bills are less. We moved here from Rockville Centre and live in CLarence. I moved here in February and I will not lie it is colder than LI and it does snow more but they clean the streets up quickly and people continue on. In LI schools and place would close when it started to snow but not up here. The people up here are shockingly nice! I am not use to strangers holding doors and neighbors baked us cookies and made us welcome to the neighborhood sign. That would never happen in LI I was lucky I knew my neighbors name.
It takes about 5 minutes to get to a store where as in LI there are always deli's and stuff close by to where ever you lived. Little by little I am getting used to it. I get aggravated because everyone always looks at you like you are crazy when you say you moved up here from LI. The famous line I hear is that people move out of Buffalo not into Buffalo. Some people also say that there is nothing to do around here but it is the same like in LI shopping, movies, restaurants and the casino's are close by So far (other than the snake) I do like it here, I wish my parents moved here with us but it is a 45 min. flight. Good Luck in whatever choice you make!!!!!!
P.S. I do know that snakes are in LI but I never saw one in all of years there over here it was less than a month.

Thank you for your response.

I assume Clarence is a suburb outside of Buffalo. Is that correct? What has your experience been with local schools? Do you have school age children, and do they attend public schols or private schools?

By the way, one good thing about snakes--they'll keep the rats and mice away.

Thanks again for your response.

Clarence is a suburb. I have one child and she is 21 years old so I can not tell you how the school is over here but I did read that Clarence and Williamsville have a pretty good school district if that helps.

I also lived in Long Island for a year, and the traffic there was definitely worse! I never really felt safe there. ( We lived in Rockville Center). We had to move a lot for my husband's job and we chose to move back here 3 times. I live in Clarence, but have also lived in Amherst and North Tonawanda which are all suburbs of Buffalo. Our whole family likes it here. We think there is a lot to do, lots of good places to eat, shopping, the water, concerts, stuff for kids and families, and when you are shopping, doing groceries, etc., you can see a lot of people you know out and about. The schools are good, with Williamsville and Clarence fighting for #1 and #2. Even with all the jokes about Buffalo, I have met many people who came back.

What I recommend you do is get over your ophidiophobia, and fast! Theres NOTHING to be afraid of! And once you get over your fear, youll thank yourself for it. You might even enjoy their company when you do! My brother used to be a huge ophidiophobic. One day after hours of convincing him, he held my kingsnake and fell in love with it. Now he actively goes on snake hunting trips with me and laughs at how scared he used to be.

I know that I must put on a brave face and deal with them, but do I actually have to like them ????? I wouldn't care where they were as long as I never had to see them.
