I kinda expected that but it should be legal. More & more people state & nation wide will continue to be busted & jailed for growing, smoking or selling grass & the tax payers will continue to foot the bill.

The united states is a very prudish nation.

There'll just be another proposition in a couple years and in a couple years after that etc. until one day the measure will pass. It's inevitable.

I don't think Prop 19 will pass even though the student voters are expected to be fairly high. This is not a life or death issue anyway. If a person wants to smoke marijuana in California it is so easy to get a prescription and dispensaries sell top quality weed and hashish. The governor recently dropped possession charges to a misdemeanor that doesn't even go on a person's record. But I do think the taxes California could get from legal cannabis would be a good thing.

There have been rumors about the No on 19 campaign recieving cartel money.
I have no proof these rumors are true, but I do wonder how much political influence the cartels have in California. There really isn't any way of proving this.

I also sometimes wonder if the illegal immigration problem had not gotten out of hand to the point that it did, if California would be a great deal MORE socially liberal than it is - and whether the conservative values of many of the more recent additions to CA have made the state more socially conservative and prudish than it would be otherwise. I'm still not sure whether this is the case, but it's something to think about.

OTOH, there's a strong possibility of Nancy Pelosi losing her seat to Republican John Dennis (the strongest GOP challenger she's ever faced) due to Pelosi's opposition to 19 and Dennis' support of Prop 19, so even if Prop 19 fails some politicians who support it might go down.

The almost unified opposition to 19 amongst California's bipartisan political establishment is a factor in why it's not doing better in the polls. If Pelosi loses her job because of supporting 19 and San Francisco elects a pro-cannabis Republican to replace her, that would make a big impact on CA politics....not only regarding 19 but also regarding California voters' unfortunate tendency to vote for anyone with a (D) or (R) after their name....

San Francisco would rather commit mass suicide than vote for a republican, regardless of his/her views.

Well I was an elected DA (South Texas) in my youth and like every other district attorney's office we had limited staff and resources. I had to decide which cases to make deals on and which to prosecute more fully. Marijuana cases were a waste of my time and resources but I had to go through the motions. It was much more satisfying concentrating on violent offenders and putting them away a long time.

I'm in Congressman Paul's district and we both think the government should stay out of marijuana which is a personal choice. Perhaps someone will call Ron Paul a liberal...
