Reagan understood that just like both Bush Sr and Jr. America can not afford to take in the poor of the world especially when we have so many of our own citizens struggling in poverty. It would be better for Americans to help Mexicans stay in their own country and develop industries and birth control to help them.
The Democrats wanted to convert the poor Latinos to voters since the poor almost always vote Democrat since they hand out other people's money through entitlements and welfare.
The Republicans I think fear doing the right thing because they've been dealing with Democrats using the treasury to pay off getting votes in CA for over forty years.
If you think about it, one side offers a plate with hundred dollar bills if you advance them and their socialism. The other side keeps harping that we'll go broke doing that, need smaller government, less government employees and people on the dole, but how do you push tough reality and get elected when someone will give you money for a while to vote Democrat?
Granted the whole thing is sinking fast, but I think plenty of people are willing to put their hands out all the way down to the gutter.

That IMO is why there is no real fence or Federal intervention.

Anyway, what are your examples?
Those southern Governors all became Republicans once Lyndon Johnson passed the historic civil rights bills of the 1960's.

Robert Byrd WAS a KKK member but so was former Republican Governor of Calif. and Supreme Court justice Earl Warren.

Both men would later repudiate their association with the KKK and as public figures they became staunch supporters of civil rights.

And to CalSur's point about the old GOP, the civil rights legislaiton of the 1960's was passed with REPUBLICAN support, could NOT have passed without it.

HOWEVER, the Republican party TODAY...embraces candidates who openly criticize the historic civil rights legislation of the 1960's (R. Paul, etc).

So if tens of millions of Chinese drop out of the sky by plane this year, falsify documents and go to work here, we give them amnesty? NO

Could happen, but it would sink the country.

These are not like past immigrants with two skills really support themselves. There are SO many here that they are IMO not becoming Americans at heart. Most have a main allegiance to where they came from.
This is not like the past where people are getting medical evaluations before coming here, many are coming with their STDs and TB along with all forms of disease.

PS: My wife was born in Mexico. I know more than most on this issue and how many are thinking that come from there.
They mostly don't come here because they love America and wanted to be Americans.

I know of no mainstream politician who thinks all races of people aren't the same these days as far as equality is concerned.
At most they argue that you should not give free rides to any race because of their race. If there are grants or loans for school (as an example) let them do so based on financial need if they are good students no matter what the color and so forth.

What current day politicians don't honor everyone's civil rights? Which ones do you know of?

I am fully aware of Nixon's "Southern Strategy" of wooing Dixiecrat racist away from the Democratic party to become Republican who they detested for decades as the hated party of Lincoln. That was inviting the devil in and now the GOP has to pay for their pact with the devil. Eventually the stain of that evil permeated the entire Republican party and why it is rightly called the "Party of the South." But that ugly cynicism never really penetrated California and our brand of Republicanism was based on fiscal conservatism [in spite of the fact that Reagan still holds the record as the governor who raised taxes the most of any]. California Republicans are a different strain yet when they want to be like the national GOP they find that they are a lonely group in the West doomed to losing every election. Smart Republicans will change in order to appeal to a broader constituency but smart Republicans are also a lonely group.

What are you smoking? The stimulus bill had 37% of the total $787 billion targeted to TAX CUTS and INCENTIVES.

Yes...I realize you are aware of it. My post was amied at other posters who seemed to think it was only the Dems who embraced Jim Crow.

Unfornately we have to claim Tricky Dick Nixon as a native Californian....

I think there are a lot of parallels between the current GOP illegal immigrant bashing (read: anti-Latino) strategy and Nixon's southern strategy. Both very shameful attempts to curry votes......

Yeah, Nixon was foolish but even he was a pragmatist who stayed clear of divisive social issues unlike the current batch of mullah-centric evangelical Republicans.

Essentially the poll indicates that these respondents indicated a total lack of knowledge in basic civics, American history, and economics.

Cool story bro.
