We have scorpions in the Coachella Valley - not the large back ones you see in AZ though. But, they do get into your house from time to time. I don't like them, but I'd rather have a scorpion in the house any day over one of those large, nasty, flying cockroaches that everyone insists are "palmetto bugs" or "date beetles". I don't know what they're called, and frankly, I don't really care - just keep them out of my house!!!

These are the scorpions we have: Google Image Result for http://img.webmd.com/dtmcms/live/webmd/consumer_assets/site_images/articles/health_tools/bad_bugs_slideshow/istock_photo_of_arizona_bark_scorpion.jpg

Oh, and we also have these lovely things: Google Image Result for http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1b/Taveuni_longhorn_beetle.jpg

Hmm! Maybe we need to import some for Ozarks border patrol to keep outlanders and flatlanders away. I'd suggest some along the Mexican border as well but they'd probably just wanna eat 'em!

Deep fried scorpions on a stick sprinkled with chili. A Mexican favorite. Yum

I'd have to see you eat one before I believed that "yum" part.

Not me carnal. The yum was sarcastic. Too many other deep fried dishes to enjoy.

I lived for a year in Arizona and loved the weather and landscape, however, I am petrified of scorpions. I have been looking into similar locations such as Texas or New Mexico, only to find out the scorpion/rattlesnake population is as bad if not worse there. That leaves me with California. Pests other than the previously mentioned and spiders are tolerable. I looked into San Diego area but apartments are expensive and I wasn't sure if wages are high enought to support the expense. I am experienced in accounting but do not have a degree so I am not sure what that would get me.
Jasper you're just "down the road from me"(I'm in montreal),like you i am sick beyond words of snow & sub-zero temp.and i have a psychopathic hatred of humidity.I was ambivalent btwn So-Cal. and L.V. because i love them both up until just a hour ago over that scorpion & black widow issue.
I like Vegas for the sportsbooks, the chicks and the 24hr life style and i love So-Cal for the chicks, the magnificent landscape and the weather.
I am appalled more than i am scared of scorpions and black widows however just before coming to the California side i always check the Vegas one.I never been elsewhere than the strip or to Phurump(for overnights only),so i was never aware of their scorpion and black widow issues. That sh_t is just as prevalent there as black flies and wasps are for us around here, however after checking the L.V. threads 1 hr ago i am not ambivalent anymore!
You should read the ridiculous among of precautions they have to follow on a daily basis in order to avoid a sting or bite!So if one day or night you come home a little stone, drunk or just plain jane tired and forget the protocols than you're F.Furthermore they are not just in the suburbs anymore, you can now find them near the trip for crying out loud.
The drought might be the reason why they are all over Vegas instead of certain areas as it was before.
Therefore it's going to be so-Cal or bust for me!

Scorpions in houses?
