In the places I've lived in California I knew exactly one African (a guy from Zimbabwe). Can't think of any person from non-Spanish speaking Caribbean nations. I think they're more common in the East or Atlanta.

I met lots of people from Africa and the Caribbean in Los Angeles, but no where else in California.

You need to be in areas with these groups to function or be happy? I have always lived in areas of the worl where people didnt look like me. I called it broadening my horizons.

I am not from Africa or from the Islands. I am American, so technically, I am "broadening my horizons". The people I have met from the various African and Caribbean countires/cultures have been incredibly beautiful, smart, kind, creative, and accepting. So yes, I would love to be in areas with these groups.

On the West Coast I'd have to say that would be the Bay Area. But LA has a lot of African/Carribean people too. In the Bay Area people live everywhere but mainly, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Berkeley areas.

I read some stat the other day that California has like the 2nd/3rd largest population of African Americans .... still it's only 6-7% of the population here.. In general though, there aren't large cultural concentrations .. They tend to be spread out all over.. I ran into a guy the other day in Palo Alto who joked.. Hey, what are you doing in my neighborhood.. I was confused for a bit.. and he was quipped : I thought I was the only black guy in PA .. In the bay area, I don't see many.. Being from FL, i longed for good Jamaican food but there are only a couple of good Jamaican restaurants here.. even harder to find Caribbean cultural centers.. good luck

Sounds like many other cultures to me, including North Americans,

The Bronx and other areas of NY are full of these two groups you singled out to have these qualities, which to me, says other groups don't possess. Might want to relocate

Florida of course is full of island culture everywhere you look....
California has a good amount but they are thinly spread and are a small percent of the population. Given other dominant/proud cultures here that are in larger %'age/#'s.. such island culture gets subdued.
