Traveling with the hubs while he works 1/2 hour away. Should we (6 year old and I) stay downtown? Is it a walkable city with things to do for kiddos? Bus access?

It's pretty much the opposite of walkable. There are things to do, but you need a car. I don't know that I would recommend the downtown area for kids. It's not as bad as some others would say it is, but I don't think there would be a lot for them to do around there other than the library.

Fresno has a transit system. It will get you around Fresno, Clovis, Malaga and Calwa, if you have the patience to use it that much.
I had to make the same choice I would stick to the Tower District, the Blackstone/Abbey corridor, Shaw Ave, or Cedar Ave. Olive Ave has good service across Fresno, but most of Olive Ave isn't desirable anymore.

You need a car. Period. Take it from someone who lives in a very walking/public transit type place and also lived in Fresno two years. Its very spread out and very car-centric. There are plenty of things to do with kids there but they're all over town. They have an excellent zoo (one of the top three in California) with the adjacent Storyland/Playland, a couple of huge water parks, a couple of kids fun centers (Boomers, Blackbeards), big multiplex theaters, the Fresno Museum of Art and Science (which has a good children's section) and Forestiere Underground Gardens (although that's probably more geared towards adult interest).

Good deal!
Fresno is really easy to drive in for a city. Very wide streets laid out in a grid pattern and a good freeway system. You can get almost anywhere in under 30 minutes.

Woodward Park on the north side is very nice. Riverpark (lifestyle center) also in the same area if you want to go to the movies or do some shopping. Also Old Town Clovis is interesting, but I'm not sure how much kids would be interested in this area.

Why torture yourself and move to Fresno? If you have to live there, at least look at Clovis. Hopefully you have strong lungs, you definitely will need them to breathe in that terrible pollution!

She didn't say anything about moving there. Her husband appears to be on a short term work assignment and she and their child are coming along. Yeah, but Fresno's horrible, blah, blah, blah.
