Newport Coast, beautiful vistas, open space, canyons, a bit removed from the traffic and tourists. Safe, clean, family friendly. Cool breezes and a laid back atmosphere.

I vote for Long Beach. Long Beach gets a bad rap because of the gangster rap days, but it is a very cool place . It's a big city surrounded by a huge city, so i think it is often over looked. sure there are still some bad areas, but you've also got an excellent (though small) airport, a massive port complex, quaint beach villages (i.e. belmont shore) and a pretty happening downtown area with its own aquarium and arena. and that is just scratching the surface (long beach grand prix, pride festival, museums, light rail, etc.).

To me, it's a toss-up between Pomona and Ontario. I think one of them will rise as a regional job center in the next couple of decades as SoCal's population booms.

Pomona has an urban-ish downtown and a state university, and Ontario has an international airport.

In Southern California, La Crescenta. Near the foothills and a world apart from the rest of Southern California.
