San Diego has a larger population than San Francisco by city limits. But SF is one of the densest cities in the US. So which city feels larger?

This is a no brainer. As we have seen over and over, city populations are meaningless when it comes to judging a city's size. It's the metro size, the size of and facilities available in the center, even the city's reputation that makes a difference. San Francisco may be over-rated in some circles but it is undeniably one of the anchors in the U.S., one of the big ones. San Diego is not in the same class at this point in history.

San Diego is bigger. San Francisco feels bigger, feels more like a city where as SD feels more like 1000 suburbs in search of a city which, considering that SD annexed all of the former townships around it, the opposite of what happened in SF, that's pretty much what it is.

You word this thread wrong San Diego has 325 Square Miles as opposed to San Francisco 46 Square Miles.

San Diego has more people than San Francisco as San Jose also has more people than San Francisco.

San Francisco is much more Urban Than Either Cities San Diego or San Jose California and Feels More URBAN but doesn't feel bigger when traveling across the city square mileage..

San Diego is like a laid-back version of LA. SF is dense and urban like Boston.

You can't arbitrarily cleave a city from its metro. Clearly the Bay Area feels (and is) larger than the San Diego Area. It is a mini LA.

Never understood why people said this.

I'd say SD is more spread out, while SF feels more dense and compact.

San Diego feels like a SoCal Sacramento by the sea.

San Francisco and LA are sister cities.
Same goes for their surrounding larger CSAs. Greater LA-OC-IE may have more than twice the people, but the Bay Area punches above its weight, and one can find equivalent counterparts.

San Diego and Sacramento are each others equals.
