Well, If you live in Eastern CA you are not too far from a fault. The Sierra is rising 2 inches a year. A bit calmer on the Modoc plateau and Susanville north.

Exactly. Spot on. Except a greater diversity of crops. (as much as the fruits and nuts comment is overplayed - thats what grows there). And a stronger hispanic presence than the Great Plains/Midwest.
