^^In general I agree, but as you said there are great programs at all different schools. Even some of the small privates in California are highly ranked, Claremont, Harvey Mudd etc.
Cal Poly is an outlier for the CSU system, its easily as competitive as any of the UCs outside of Berkeley and LA. For the schools I mentioned which is more than 50% of Poly, its as good as any UC.

Everything works the same way on the other coast...and I hear "(Fifth best public school in the state) has programs that are just as good as those at Yale!" No, it doesn't. Even if the teachers are just as good, the students aren't, that that matters, too.
Well said.

I know of one College in California that is the absolute BEST in the Nation/World if you want to study Veterinary Medicine and be a Veterinarian.

Best Veterinary Medicine Programs | Top Veterinary Schools | US News Best Graduate Schools

That would be the University of California, Davis, near Sacramento.

UC Davis is also the absolutely BEST in the nation for Viticulture & Enology.

What other universities in California are absolutely the BEST in the nation or world in one or two disciplines?

Maybe CalTech in some Science discipline? or Stanford for....? UCLA and/or USC -- Film Production?

Yeah, the vet school is ok, one of my good friends in college did undergrad at Cal Poly then went to vet school at Davis.
My son applied to all the UCs + Cal Poly last year, got into all of them and picked UCLA because he's pre-med. The Poly recruiter said it best. He said they dont try to compete with those larger schools, but they know their undergrad programs compete well with any school and the class sizes are more friendly. He said come to Cal Poly get your Bachelors degree then go to Berkeley or UCLA for grad work. Best of both worlds.

Because I have attended two UCs and Humboldt. The latter had much better facilities, teachers, and connections in the field. It was pretty outrageously cool. And at a smaller school, the natural resources folks tend to interact a lot and create a dynamic culture. And the students and faculty are world class there. Humboldt, like Cal Poly SLO is a real gem in the CSU system. Not nearly so good for graduate school though, as there is not as much money flowing through campus as at the UC research universities.

Read the comments section under that link:
"Cal Poly SLO, UT Austin, V-Tech are the three largest programs in the country. Is it any wonder they get the top 5 most brownie points?"

"The article describes how the survey is conducted. There does not seem to be a quantitative statistic in the evaluation. It would seem to be entirely subjective, and therefore a useless statistic. It would be better to simply publish the NAAB grade, at least that is not entirely subjective."
