This here, folks, is that classic NorCal so-liberal-we're-conservative-about-it leftism that we've all come to find so endearing.

Those aren't cities, sir.

Learn to read before you start kicking at an entire section of a STATE.

Well, I would agree with his analogy if he were comparing San Francisco to San Diego. But, the Bay Area, San Diego County, and the rest of California aren't monolithic.

The guy living in Berkeley says he has been coming to Sacramento a lot for the last year and fell in love with it, not just the city, but the people he's met. They are both just under 30.

This is how they both described Sacramento.

Sacramento - Friendly, Neighborly, Organic, Garden-loving, Prideful, Overly environmentally-conscience, Politically Savy.
I would agree with the two youngsters above and add:

Sacramento is athletic, artsy, diverse, walkable, gritty in parts, politically moderate, outgoing and open-minded with passionate and loyal Sacramento Kings fans.

The northeast part of the Sacto Metro - Roseville-Rocklin-Lincoln and El Dorado Hills-Cameron Park-Shingle Springs is the Orange County or Simi Valley of the Sacramento Valley. Folsom could be considered the Peninsula-South Bay of the Sacramento Valley with a twist, big-truck and genuine Folsom Rodeo enthusiasts.

Being an SD native there's no doubt about the hatred, and animosity that many San Diegans have for L.A. The fact that the L.A. area runs this state economically, and politically pisses a lot of people off down here. And that doesn't include the rants about illegal immigrants running loose there, or the insane traffic jams, the high crime, pollution, and aesthetics issues for being a concrete jungle.

The reality is that L.A. doesn't care one bit about teeny tiny "good ole boy" San Diego.

San Diego= Still Small Townish thinking, and in the way things get done here, the media included. Expensive, overrated, overpriced, natural beauty in the landscaping, beaches and hills.. Still overall politically conservative as a County. Heavily Military dominated economy, Mid-Western in feel because of all the transplants, Rednecks everywhere with massive pick up trucks mixed in with Wealthy old money folks which a recipe for disaster as a progressive. Suburbian, sleepy, lack of a true huge big city feel although we are the 8th largest city in the nation (2nd in the State). Our city has grown up in many ways over the past 15 years, it's just not enough yet to even be considered world class. NIMBISM dominates in every community, anti-everything. Very segregated, poor Minorities to the South of the 8 Freeway, and is very White North of 8 and now all over in Downtown SD. We do have cool urban area's that are great, but nowhere near the likes or the scale of the Bay Area or L.A. Traffic is getting worse, more and more people are moving here, but the lack of new housing is creating huge problems which is causing skyrocketing home prices and rental rates. Homeless people in just about every part of town. Infrastructure problems, pothole riddled streets and falling apart sidewalks. Hey but the weather is perfect, that's all that should matter right?

L.A. and OC = Is where everything is at, endless amounts of entertainment opportunities, awesome food choices, extremely massive metropolis with tons of diversity, and culture. Hollywood, trendsetting ways in terms of style, what's hot and what's not. The birthplace of Gangster Rap and Lowriders. Loads of jobs, and is an economic powerhouse for the state. Great grid street pattern layout with ease of access to bypass freeways if need be. It's Cool n Gritty, dirty, loud, traffic nightmares, overcrowded, expensive, and very poor at the same time, crime, gangs, and the feel at times of being in a 3rd world country. Lot's of shopping options, Big city feel, it has presences and importance. The people and the city can care less about what you have to say about them. After living in L.A., every other city pales in comparisons besides for NYC and a few other big cities. It thrives on it's energy and excitement.

SF-Oak= Great cities that have distinction and character, one that is really gritty and downright scary at times, and the other is still kinda gritty, but safer and cleaner. The urban feel and amazing architecture that are in both cities. Again, great food, classy but ultra expensive. Diverse racially and is a hub for tech and financial industries . An economical and cultural powerhouse. A Hipster's paradise, with nerdy techies thrown in. Dynamic and exciting, beautiful, Golden Gate Bridge really defines SF. World Class, attracts a high amount of business professionals but also a lot of bums and vagrants similar to L.A.

Sac = Never been there so I can't say.

Santa Barbara - Sort of the Santa Cruz of the Southland, but not because it is not Bohemian, not near as liberal, really old money, conservative, more Mexian, quintessential SoCal beach town, way more Spanish Cal Adobe architecture. UC Santa Barbara is academically rated a lot higher than UC Santa Cruz.

What would you say, in a few adjectives or simple descriptives, describes the personalities of some Californian cities?

I'll start:
  • Los Angeles: Beautiful, glamorous, gritty, spunky, dirty, street-smart, idealistic, cosmopolitan
  • San Francisco: Gorgeous, democratic socialist, intelligent, dirty, homey, cosmopolitan, snobby
  • Oakland: Tough, punkish, ghetto, charming, endearing, dirty, industrial, artsy
  • San Diego: Optimistic, small-townish, cliquish, prideful, beer-making, anti-L.A., safe, clean
  • Sacramento: Political, small-townish, comfortable, flat, green, underrated, (arguably) overlooked
  • San Jose: Innovative, boring, South Asian, sleepy, safe, intelligent, laid-back
Have you been in SJ lately? Meridian was closed yesterday b/c someone shot at a police officer during a traffic stop with a high-powered rifle! All hell is breaking loose here, and it's only getting worse by the weeky.
