The drought certainly didn't help matters but with so much rain this past winter, grasses just shot up and every summer we have to deal with these fires. This year it's extremely bad.

Just heard on the news there is a new fire that started today in Calaveras County @ Mokelumne Hill. That area was hit hard in September 2015. Didn't think there was anything left to burn but apparently there is. And this scorching heat on top of it.

This is why I don't complain about firefighters and what they are paid to fight these fires. I'd like to see any of those gripers put all the gear on and go out and do what they do.

Eucalyptus are giant weeds.

And deadly ones, which practically explode when hit with fire.

A brush fire in the Verdugo Mountains jumped the highway this afternoon, starting with less than an acre burning. By 5 p.m., Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said the fire had spread to about 500 acres and dozens of firefighters were working on the ground to halt the flames from spreading to Burbank.

I live in Oroville town so the fires this summer have been anywhere from 6 to 12 miles as the crow flies from me, but the smoke is just getting oppressive. Really tired of it. To the person who said its typical, we didn't have a great many fires of note anywhere is Central or Northern California until about the late 1980s on. Especially the last 10 years. Forest management (or lack of it), too much human activity in wooded areas and more frequent droughts. As for the Ponderosa Fire near Feather Falls it was 100% preventable. Some homeless guy burning a campfire outside a designated area for the past month. Its a wonder he didn't catch the forest on fire sooner. Idiot.

Now it's spread to 3,000 acres. This horrific heat is obviously not helping. Fast-moving wildfire destroys 3,000 acres; homes evacuated in L.A., Burbank - LA Times

There's a big one just up the road from me. Ten thousand acres and 0% containment. Human caused, under investigation. It's inching up to some really old giant sequoia groves.

Pier Fire:
https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5548/
Fire Summary: The fire was extremely active last night, primarily on the western and southern sides, growing by approximately 3,000 acres. Routine down-canyon winds were exacerbated by very strong easterly winds from thunderstorms over the Sierra Mountains. At approximately 9:30 p.m., the fire spotted across California Highway 190 and the Middle Fork of the Tule River near Upper and Lower Coffee Campgrounds. Crews already in place tried to contain the fire but were quickly overwhelmed as it grew to 200 acres in less than 10 minutes.
