Are there any areas in Lake Tahoe that are considered "bad areas" or areas that someone should avoid if searching for a second home or vacation home?

What areas do you recommend?

Are there areas that are "close-in" - that have good "walkability?"

Thanks for any info.

Others can comment with much better info than me, but I just wanted to point out that the City of South Lake Tahoe (home to most of the development around the lake) is considering some type of vacation rental ban. This is something you should find out more about.

We go there every year, and have for many years even since moving up here to WA, total since I was a kid, over 50 years now. While we like the North and West shores best, we have stayed in the south end too. I haven’t seen anything that I would call bad, but south is definitely more crowded, loud, and has more of the old, run down cabins. Kings Beach is getting more that way now too. My favorite areas are Incline, Carnelian Bay, Homewood, and Tahoe Vista. Walkability is best in South Tahoe, Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

Thanks. Didn't even think of that!

Thank you - I never even heard of "Tahoe City!"

Tahoe City offers the best walkability, IMO. South Lake Tahoe is walkable in two parts... one part extending from about Al Tahoe Blvd to Stateline along 50, and the other part around the "Y" (aka Tahoe Valley on google maps).

For vacation homes, I'd look at Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe (Tahoe Keys, N Upper Truckee, and Pioneer trail near the southern end are nice areas), or just south of South Lake Tahoe in a town called Meyers.

Also, Hemlock brought up a good point regarding South Lake Tahoe cracking down on vacation homes. More info on that here:
South Lake Tahoe, CA - Official Website - Vacation Home Rentals

If the restrictions/new regulations are an issue, you might be able to skirt around them in Meyers as it's technically not in the city limits.
