Gavin Newsom signs order banning sales of gas-powered cars in California by 2035
BY LARA KORTE
SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 10:32 AM , UPDATED 5 MINUTES AGO

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday issued an executive order requiring the sale of all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035, a move the governor says would achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and move the state further away from relying on climate change-causing fossil fuels.

Well, considering that you live in Paradise, you should be well aware of the effects of climate change.

Bravo for Newsom in having some courage to improve our environment, unlike the failed leadership in Washington.

They also are aware of the effects of a fragile, undermaintained power lines/infrastructure. How anyone expects a state already has planned power shutoffs and that just had rolling blackouts to handle this is beyond me.

The problem with these mandates is that there is no plan how to successfully implement them or fund them.

It's already beyond difficult for transit agencies to meet the 2040 deadline for ZEB's, how he expects 40 million CA's too is insane.

Never argued that PG&E isn't a major problem here. It shouldn't have been given a pass from liabilities related to wildfire, by passing these onto the taxpayers.

But, don't use this to deflect. Two wrongs do not make a right. Without government regulation on emissions, automakers will not be incentivized to change how they operate.

Why, so you can move somewhere with unrelenting capitalism, where environmental concerns are overlooked? This is like the real life Lorax.

It's not a deflection, I'm showing that our power grid can't even handle the current electrical loads. How do you expect it to handle it if everyone has to start buying electric vehicles? It's sound nice but you should actually delve into what it will take to successfully implement it.

Its called investing more in renewable energy to meet this timeline. We have a huge desert in part of this state that can be leveraged to build more solar plants and/or wind turbines. I agree that more planning is needed but that shouldn't be a reason to move the goalposts from this critical need.

And how do you expect to move all that energy and be able to deliver it? And what happens when the sun goes down? How do you expect to make up for the rapid drop off in electricity production?

Reinforce the power grids, ever heard of them? This is 15 years out. There is a lot of time to plan for this.
