California-grown coffee.

I thought you needed a tropical climate for growing coffee.

It will grow anywhere. The difference is in how well they grow and what the coffee tastes like. I had a Coffea Arabica bonsai in my Seattle office window that blossomed, I hand pollinated it and got beans. I roasted and ground them and made a cup of coffee big enough to fill an espresso cup. The taste, however was not great.

Of all the coffee I have made my favorite is from Cuba, followed by Kauai. I have never seen coffee from California and probably wouldn't buy it if I did, but of someone offered me a taste I would try it.

Cool! I just moved to Eureka from Seattle and I was surprised to see this small city had several coffee roasters and small time shops. It has a real cool northwesty feel with the coffee and chocolate shops in Old Town; I've never had the coffee from around here specifically (I'm a tea girl) but I love the small mom and pop cafes.

I know of people who have grown and roasted their own beans in Seattle and other places like the Denver. Mostly following the DIY coffee ethics; trying to avoid the ethical dilemmas of purchasing beans in areas known for deforestation, farmer neglect and so on. It's well meaning but as Hemlock140 said, the difference comes from where and how their grown. Most people will enjoy it as a novelty or to add in a local products gift basket, but really nothing more I would think.

Still cool little shout out to Humboldt for something other than crime, cannabis, or crazies haha.

I had a small cup of Kopi Luwak for $5 on a tour in Bali about 10 years ago. If you get over where it comes from, it truly is amazing coffee.

So I hear. I'll be sure to add that experience to my bucket list.

According to the article, Santa Barbara and San Diego counties were the center of Cali’s coffee production in 2018. Coffee does best in areas that are warm all year (not hot) and frost-free. Do those counties fit the bill?

Yes, San Diego is far south and Santa Barbara has a south facing shoreline.

I’d try it if it were priced normally...but not $18/cup. Hawaii coffee is not worth a premium IMO, I don’t expect California coffee to be either.
