Hi, I'm a 19 year old male, from Connecticut and my friend and I are putting serious thought into maybe moving to California and starting over, is there anywhere you can suggest that would be along the coast or at least within walking distance of the beach and have affordable apartments as well as a low crime rate and decent job market? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I'm currently staying with a separate friend and her family out of necessity and need to figure stuff out soon as I'm afraid my welcome may become overstayed within the next month or two.

What line of work are you in? What do you think your salary will be?
What does "affordable" mean?

Any general work, retail, waiting, bar tending, I don't have a degree just yet and I didn't go to any technical school so that's pretty much the work I could look for. As for salary, I just recently got a job at $10/hr. and was planning on saving up for the next two to three months before I try to head out there, but a preferable salary would be one that could at least cover apartment expenses in the area as well as leave some spending cash for food and other necessities. Affordable would be referring to something a 19 year old and a 20 year old who are supporting themselves entirely (or at least trying to) could afford, for example in Danbury, Connecticut affordable would be around $1000-$1250 for a two bedroom apartment.

Thank you, that link will definitely be of help, but which area/town/city would be the best based on the other criteria I mentioned?

Check out parts of Long Beach, Oceanside, Vista & San Marcos to find anything remotely "affordable". Have you checked Craigslist at all?

Yeah, I tried Craigslist but I had no idea what areas where safer than others, could anybody tell me what the usual pay is for typical "teenager" jobs?

I think you need to do a reality check. Teenage jobs almost never support living "along the coast or at least within walking distance of the beach and have affordable apartments as well as a low crime rate".

Umm the harshness wasn't exactly appreciated there but either way, I know I'm asking for alot here, but I figured I could at least get suggestions involving my criteria and then go from there, I'm not looking for a perfect place here, just one where I could maybe walk to the beach at night if I'm bored due to my insomnia(whether its a 30 minute walk or an hour and a half I don't care) and wouldn't be so expensive that i won't have money for food, and isn't situated somewhere I'm likely to have a gun pointed in my face at point blank range on any given night....that's not too much to want if you ask me....some safety, decent rent, and in an area I stand a decent chance of getting a job in(I'm willing to work my ass of at said job as well to make the rent, so don't concern yourself with that, please just give me some ideas and incite being that you're all from california or at least I assume you would be if you're responding to this thread).

Furthermore I found a place in Alameda that seems like it would be perfect, so now that that's covered, does anybody know what the job situation is like there?
