We will be moving sometime in September 2010. I need help on finding a place to live. My husband is in the Air force and we have 2 boys, one 3 months and the other almost 4yrs. We would like to live on base. I know we have to get on a list but if we happen to not be able to live on base then what areas around Travis would you recommend? We are wanting to rent. What are the best and safest areas? And what Schools? Anything you could tell me would be LOTS of help! Thank you!!!

I'd pick Vacaville over Fairfield any day. Suisun City is okay, but I'd still go with V'ville. There are little places further out, if you want a more rural atmosphere.

Travis has excellent schools onbase, so that should probably be the first choice. They're probably the best adapted for integrating new students as well, since kids move all the time with the military families.

California School Performance Maps is a good starting source if you want to measure school performance. Generally, better schools correlate to a good family neighborhood, so Vacaville is probably a good start off base. I have friends in Fairfield and while they're happy with the price they paid, the education not so much.

Sorry I can't help as I was never stationed in the area, however, you might consider asking your question on http://www.city-data.com/forum/military-life-issues/ a good number of retired and active duty service men & women visit the forum.

Please thank your husband for his SERVICE to our great nation and I thank and salute you for the your contribution also, together you are a team.

Hello,

We are also moving to Travis sometime in Sept. 2010. My husband has been in Korea for the year so we haven't had time to take a scouting trip out to the area. I have the same concerns as you regarding schools and a safe area to live. It is frustrating not knowing anything about the area...also I hear there is alot of crime in Fairfield which leads me to want to stay away there. I'm going to keep my eye on your thread...hopefully you get more info about which areas to stay away from and/or more importantly to me, which neighborhoods are safe and super child-friendly! I've never been anxious about a military move before (because we didn't have children). Now that we do, I have alot more to worry about it seems! LOL! Hope your move goes well!

Vacaville wold be a god choice as would Dixon or Martinez and really Fairfield is very nice. Do not consider Vallejo, Pittsburg or Richmond, but American City could do well. Anything in the Napa Valley is too pricey as is Davis.

I'd live in Vacaville. I'm not military, but I lived in a complex there for a year with tons of military families with young kids. If you stay on the west side of Vacaville Travis AFB is a very quick commute. Vacaville isn't the most exciting city, but it is safe and a great place to raise a family. I would definitely avoid Fairfield - it have major issues with crime and gangs, and the schools are terrible. The Vacaville schools aren't amazing, but they're definitely better than in Fairfield!
