Look into Northern San Diego County. Great climate and not too expensive compared to the rest of coastal Southern CA. It's less crowded, not rural, but mostly low density suburbia with a good amount of open space around. If you don't have a lot of debt and live fairly modestly you can make it on $40K.

I've been seeing that San Luis Obispo recommended quite a bit in these forums.

I do know my company has locations in Hawthorne and Santa Maria. I'll have to see if we have any closer to SLO, and check in northern san diego county.

only debt I have is my truck. Which I'm hoping to sell that and just get a some kind of bike. Lower payments and insurance that way.

Whats Santa Barbara like?

I should also throw in this criteria. My gf has a bachelor's degree in some kind of computer networking. If we're married and both move out there, we'll have my income plus hers.

Is there an area that would be better suited for her type of career?

What's worse?

Attracting $200K/year salaried people to California who (due to their ability to pay more for housing) could drive housing prices higher?

or

Attracting $20K/year families of six people?

She only makes 30k over here. It looks like she'll make about 40k with the same type of job there. I'd round down to say our total would be 70-75k. I imagine she could shoot for a better job, but don't think she really wants to take full advantage of her degree.

We don't need some expensive house to be happy, we live in an one bedroom apt. We would like a bit more space, but I realize if we move we'll have to downsize quite a bit.

I used to drive through the projects on a daily basis, and I know what you mean about the low income large families.

Are these the only two choices?

Wish I would have lived there during my time in CA, but..
SLO is pretty nice. I do like some of those central coastal areas.

At least you've alreay had the opportunity to live in CA...
