What's the cheapest car insurance company in Ontario? Looks like we'll be paying close to double for the privilege of owning our 3 cars (two sedans and one minivan) in Ontario. Do any companies give discounts for 3 cars shared between only two drivers, or will be basically be paying 3 full premiums for the cars?

It depends on where you are moving. Throughout Ontario there are over 100 Farm Mutual insurance companies, they are owned by their customers. Home insurance is also available, at the end of profitable years they send a rebate to customers (some you have to be a customer for 2 years). It's often 10%, on occasion 20%. There are discounts for more than one vehicle and or more than one policy under the same address. All of the 100 or so neighbourhood companies own a reinsurer so no one Mutual can take too large a hit.

One disadvantage for snowy winters.

Seems our car insurance is "always" a lot higher than any place with mild winters.

But you already mentioned you don't want to live in the GTA, (snow desert )
and I suspect that anywhere outside of the GTA in Ontario "should" have cheaper car insurance.

Anywhere outside of the GTA you'll be paying MUCH less. I know a guy that lives in the city register his car across the province in rural Niagara and saved almost half.

Thanks, I'll look into the mutual companies.

Who knows, we may end up in the GTA proper, but right now it looks like Hamilton or Niagara are probably our best bets. As I get older I seem to despise traffic congestion more and more.

As mentioned, premiums in the GTA will be higher than in rural areas. Most large companies offer discounts for multiple vehicles, but the policy varies from company to company.

Shop around -- prices can vary by hundreds of dollars. There are several internet sites which will provide comparitive rates from multiple companies

Coming from the US, it will be very helpful if you bring a copy of your driving record for the last 10 years. Insurance companies really like to see those clean records.
