If there's something scandalous about tuition in US colleges, it's how every program is so damn expensive at decent universities. If there's something scandalous about tuition in Quebec, it's how students of some medical specializations get to pay the same damn thing as a history major.

3 of my friends are psychiatrists (woe is me, I know) and their monthly net salary is higher than the sum of what they paid for their university education. Side effect of Quebec's egalitarian society.

Nothing wrong with that. In some countries, university is free. Germany charges something like 500 EUR per semester.
I don't see why people should have to take loans or get into debt to get a degree. Education should be accessible and affordable.

Although Quebec has some serious spending problems that need to be dealt with.

Of course, education should be accessible and affordable. It already is in Quebec. I'm not talking about increasing tuition to $20k/yr for medicine and dentistry, but nobody's going to put an X on medical school if tuition was $6k instead of less than $3k.

Quebec's problems when it comes to higher education is not spending, it's revenue.

On the other hand, Quebec's doctors are the lowest paid as well.
Perhaps raising tuition fees could help raise salaries, and help reduce the doctor shortage.

Or it would discourage students, and further exacerbate the shortage. Who knows?
