Just got back from camping in Ontario...first trip to Canada in 2 years
used to be impressed with how nice/friendly Canadians were
this time...jeezus...people were rude, obnoxious...didn't want to do exchange rate and INSISTED we were at par which is total bs...looked at the American dollar like it was dog poop
And the Ontario Park Police or whatever the park cop wannabees are called were complete douche bags
We were NOT in an alcohol free park...we were walking back from the beach (at the Pinery in Sarnia) when one of the Ontario Rent a cops pulls up, whips out his flash light and barks "what are you doing"
We told him, and he shined his light on the beer my friend had and asked "where are you from"
we told him "Michigan" and the DB replied "I though people in Michigan carried their booze in brown paper bags" and his db partner cop wannabee laughed...then he said "dump that...NOW...in front of me"...then got back in his "squad car" and sped off into the night...I wanted to tell him "don't you know back in the states cops get killed for no reason" but thought it best to keep quiet
This is just one incident...there was just a rudeness I was not expecting in Canada...did we do something to **** off the Canadians?? We wont be back next year...
also...do you think the Pinery Provincial Park could actually level off the camp sites they assign to 35 foot travel trailers?? You cant possibly level your trailer in half these sites...
So one visit, to one part of the second largest country in the world, taints your view of a whole country?
Next time read the rules.
Alcoholic Beverages
You are permitted to consume or possess open alcoholic beverages on a registered campsite only. A total alcohol ban is in effect the week proceeding and including the Victoria Day Weekend (phone the park information line at (519) 243-2220 for specific dates). During this period, possession of alcohol is prohibited in Pinery.
Minimum Fine - $100.00 and eviction
You were in Canada and expect retailers to accept the USD using market exchange rate? Why? Go to any American store and try to use the CAD and tell me what's their reactions. Americans should simply stop acting like the USD is some sort of golden currency everyone just loves. Canada is not Argentina or Tanzania. When you visit a country, have the decency to get some local currency.
And is it legal to drink beer in a public park? In Canada, outside of Quebec, it is illegal to drink alcohol, or even have an open container of alcohol, in a public place.

Indeed. No Canadian retailer is obligated to accept American dollars at all. If they do, don't blame them for making you pay for the privilege. They're doing you a favor.
USD is accepted at par in most of the country, the booze was illegal, and the "rent a cops" are enforcers with police powers/peace officer status (sorry, the lack of horse and red jacket is confusing). And you have the audacity to talk about shooting cops? Unbelievable. Stay in Michigan, you don't belong in international borders.
OP, why would you expect stores to take foreign currency? That doesn't make any sense. You can get Canadian dollars at your hometown bank in advance of your trip, you know. Or exchange at a Canadian bank after crossing the border. Canada is not an extension of the US. Would you expect to be able to go into a store in Germany or England, and pay in US $$? You can't do that in Mexico.
