60 years ago today… the beginning of Medicare in Canada.

Quote:
On July 1, 1962, Saskatchewan’s CCF/NDP government implemented medicare. More than 90 per cent of the province’s doctors went on strike, even refusing to deal with emergency cases.
Quote:
On July 11, a demonstration by doctors failed to draw a fraction of the promised 40,000 to 50,000 people. The government imported 150 mostly British physicians to ensure medical services. Support for the strike support waned and the parties settled on July 23.
Quote:
Sixty years ago, both countries spent about seven per cent of their economies on health care. In 2019 the U.S. spent 17 per cent, compared to 11 per cent in Canada. Most of the difference in costs isn’t related to care; it’s paperwork. The U.S. spends about US$1 trillion per year on administering its red tape-driven private system.

They lose all credibility when they attach nonsensical descriptors to inert objects. The "evil" connotation should be entirely restricted to the "human" element alone.

There is no foundation for either of the two polar opposite extremes being taken as carved in stone. Americans are not all "gun nuts". Nor are all Canadians "anti-gunners".
You nailed it. So many people think only in terms of extremes. My own sister hunted regularly for years. She has guns in her house. She's gone bear hunting (unsuccessfully, came home to find bear tracks in her yard, lol) and they carry a handgun for backup because sometimes shooting a bear just makes it mad. I myself don't care to hunt, but I know other people do and they need the proper equipment to do it. Spears are so BCE.

Same to you and to all posters on the Canada forum. Thank you for making me feel welcome in your beautiful country.

Today will be a quiet day, and tomorrow I am going to an art show/craft fair with my bf's sister.

Yes, and there are a number of us here who remember the days before it was introduced in our respective provinces. I'm sure that BruSan does, and so do I. I don't know about anybody else, but I'm certain that there are some.

Regardless, today is Canada Day, and we are 155 years old. Something to celebrate with fireworks in the park, music, and fun. Hope everybody had a happy one!

Happy Canada Day everyone..one day late!

I had the day to myself, so I picked up a coffee and a muffin, and sat down by the water in the morning. It was high tide, and the water was still. I watched about 40 Canada Geese in the water doing what geese do.

It was peaceful. No one about yet.

Then sat on the beach a few hours and had a celebratory beer and sandwich.

Chevy I'm sure there are still some other old pharts on here that will be aware of it's origin:

Well, maybe not that many after all, eh?
