I used to debate the morality but read an article that went something like this.

John (now widowed) worked hard to provide for his family, buys a house, pays it off and saves for retirement and his elder years but because it's extremely expensive and even doing the best he can it won't be enough.

Joe Smoe couldn't hold a job, drank a lot, practiced capitalism by selling drugs but of course didn't report his profits to the government. Because he has a tax payer funded EBT card to pay for food, rent, utilities Joe doesnt' need to spend his profits on the basics, he didn't save the money either, he smoked his profits instead. He was not concerned about paying for health care either, he automatically get medicaid (government paid for health care).

Jane got pregnant before graduating HS but baby daddy is gone. She lands on welfare. When the kid goes to school does Jane go back to school then get a job, no, instead she knows you the tax payer will pay, in fact she demands that you pay more taxes. After all we are supposed to help the poor right? Instead, she ends up getting pregnant again, to another man 2+ more times.

Fast forward: All 3 need long term care.

John is on mediCARE but after his benefits run out he must spend all of his savings to pay the bills, once he spent his savings and is now poor he can apply for mediCAID. IF he is below the income limit and qualifies for mediCAID he must sign over the house to the government and the government pays his NH bills. In other words he is getting a government LOAN. If his income is too high even by a small amount he will be denied help from the government and will have to get help from his family (probably hard working middle class) to help him pay the nursing home bills.

Joe Smoe on the other hand, lived life recklessly, Jane didn't use her brains either and neither has a savings or a house, Joe and Jane gets the same care as John.

Now who has morals? John? Joe? Jane?

My recollection of "Morality" means knowing Right from Wrong..so I guess given the examples OP gave it will be judged by C-D posters. Of course one can't really know the full extend of the background for each case.
For example~
John (widower) did he treat his wife and family well. Was he a workaholic and didn't actually play a role of father, partner in in home life..He did buy and pay off a home..but at what cost. and so on..BUT>>>Of course most would paint this man who worked hard, bought and paid for a home..ended up losing his employment..likely had hospital bills..goes broke..ends up on medicaid etc.....

Joe Shmoe~ what was his background, did have access to an education, did he have any family influences, did he become unable to get gainfully employed because of lack of education and so on......Again...

Jane got pregnant right out of HS....didn't go back to school..Why..was it because there was no one to take care of her baby?? Was it because she had no way to make a living to pay rent, buy food, pay for HC, and find time without working thus no income..go back to school. How about the men's responsibility to support their children?? and so on. You try and work, look after 3 kids, clothe, feed, nurture (maybe all alone/no support group to assist with childcare etc)..Again..On surface..of course Judgement by C-D folks ..Fail..Moocher..Loser ( ala Trump terminology)But yet again..No actual true background.

What truly gets me..Why and How did John end up this way..He apparently was well situated up and until his 50's...HC Costs ( no affordable HC available) Safety Net did not kick in until he spent ALL of his accumulated assets...so ended up POOR...It's shameful really...Course American's have no understanding of living any other way. Between costs of Education, and HC...no body starts their adult life DEBT free unless comes from the Elite Class ( Silver Spooners) were they start on floor 3 or 4 ..when middle-class start in the sub-basement..and spend decades getting to the first floor...Then again..How can anyone pull themselves up by boot straps when they don't even have those boots let alone straps to pull up on??

So , I, for one will not make a Judgement on anyone ..as Pope Francis says.."Who are we to Judge?"..walk a block in those shoes..may allow some incites to just what it's like. When put down, ridiculed and blamed for your station in life....I find it amazing that any of them who do rise up out of those destitute situations..a true miracle..

I understand that the OP has a lot of frustrations regarding her mother's situation, as well as the economic situation in the United States as a whole. But I don't think this post has ANYTHING to do with the "caregiving" forum. I hope the moderator agrees.

It's like in the first thread which should be in the political discussion section. The obsession with getting the mom's house is apparent in the header post and in the second post in the previous thread. That's why she immediately blows off the suggestion to sell the house or do a reverse mortgage.

Whoever devised this scenario knows nothing about how medical care is provided to the poor. Nothing.

Nice stereotypes of the poor.

Not all poor are criminals or unwed teen aged mothers.

And interestingly, many of the poor were like the John character until their jobs got moved to China.

yet another excuse?

When did that job move? And it never occurred to them to look for another job. Now there is a thinker
